Separating is based on the difference in physical properties of the substances… Think about how you would separate a bag of m&ms Some mixtures are easier to separate than others
What would you rather separate?
Filtration: technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid Heterogeneous mixtures (sand & water)
Distillation: separation technique that is based on differences in the boiling points of the substances involved Homogeneous mixtures (most) 2 liquids When precisely controlled, distillation can separate substances having boiling points that differ by only a few degrees
Crystallization: separation technique that results in the formation of pure solid particles from a solution containing the dissolved substance You boil out the liquid and are left with the solid crystals Salt water
Chromatography: technique that separates the components of a mixture (called the mobile phase) on the basis of the tendency of each to travel or be drawn across the surface of another material (called the stationary phase). Example-Ink Different masses travel different distances!
Could you separate the colors in black pen ink? How could you do this and what separation technique would you use?
