4 Fashion Over The Years There have been many dramatic changes throughout the decades 1920s- 1920s- Was the flapper fashion decade. The dresses were short and shapeless, also known as the shift dress. They were heavily beaded and tasselled. 1940s- 1940s- The clothes from this decade were made by hand from existing items of clothing. They were very simple and plain. The skirts were tailored and went to the knee and had shoulder padded jackets. 1980s- 1980s- The 1980s fashion consisted of tailored suits, big shoulder pads and was the most worn style of clothing. Another style was called the new romantics this was very flamboyant clothing with lots of frills and lovely fabrics. 2000s- 2000s- The trend of the 21 st century has changed dramatically from the 1920s. Now we wear fur boots, strappy vest tops, high heeled boots, skinny jeans and big padded coats. BACK TO CONTENTS PAGE

They all have one thing In common, they sell fashion that has come from designs, from designers. Well known designers such as Armani, Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Gucci, Chanel, Dior all make designs for the rich and famous but then these designs are also created for the high street stores. 7 Couture Costume and fashion history would not be the same without couture. Couture means dressmaking, sewing or needlework. The purchase of a couture garment is at the top level of hand customised fashion design and clothing construction made by a couture design house. The made to measure exclusive clothes are virtually made by hand and fitted to perfection for each client. Dependent on the garment and the design house, the cost of a couture item costs between £10,000 and £40,000. A couture house like Chanel will have about 150 regular clients who buy couture and another house like couture Dior will make about 20 bridal gowns per year. BACK TO CONTENTS PAGE
