Viewing, Listening & Speaking A blonde : a female with fair complexion and fair hair In American culture a blonde is often beautiful but somewhat stupid Brainstorming Have a discussion with your partner: What is a blonde?

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Aesop ( ) warns us in his Fables : We should look to the mind, and not to the outward appearance. However, Greek philosopher Aristotle ( ), holds: Personal beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction. Work in small groups to discuss: Brainstorming Group Discussion whether people can be judged by their looks

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Reference 1 I agree with what Aesop says. We should never judge people by their appearance, otherwise we may easily be cheated. Nowadays, many unemployed people dress up to be university students, journalists, or even government officials, to cheat people out of their money, so we have to be very careful. Actually, even at a job interview, it is very important to dress properly. The employer may attach more importance to ones qualities, such as sincerity, creativity and communication skills than to ones appearance. Brainstorming

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Reference 2 Clothes make the man. Although we are often told not tojudge a book by its cover, or a mans intelligence and abilities by his looks, the truth is that a persons appearance does say plenty about him. It tells us a lot about his personality, his education, his judgment, and even the opinion he hold of himself. So in my opinion Aristotle was right in saying Personal beauty is greater recommendation than any letter of introduction. But I also think that personal beauty is not just a matter of good looks or well chosen clothes; gestures, voice, the way one moves and talks are just as important because they reveal one s character, too. Brainstorming

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Now watch two movie clips. After that work in groups of 4 and have a discussion. Then finish the following tasks. Watching and Discussing Clip 1 Clip 2

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Watching and Discussing

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Watching and Discussing Book 4 – Unit 2

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Watching and Discussing Task 1. Group Discussion Discuss in group about the following topic: Do you think students should wear school uniforms? Then send a member to report your view. Reference 1 >> Reference 2 >>

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Watching and Discussing I think it is necessary for students to wear school uniforms. It makes everyone feel the same. Thus, it equalizes everyone. Students wont think too much about their different family backgrounds. Parents do not have to prepare clothes for students since the school provides them with uniforms. Then students dont have to spend money on luxurious brands. If everyone wears school uniforms, there is no need for them to follow the fashion. Therefore, students will concentrate on their study. Reference 1

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Reference 2 Watching and Discussing I dont think students should wear school uniforms. Everybody is unique. Each person may have his/her own tastes. It is impossible for everyone to appreciate the same kind of clothes. Students need to have their own opinions even from early school age. After all, they have to face their own situation when they grow up. By choosing from different clothes, they will learn to make their own decision in life.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Watching and Discussing Reference 2 >> Reference 1 >> Task 2. Group Discussion Divide the class into groups of four and discuss the topic: Is being good-looking and well-dressed very important in interview? Why or why not? Then share the answers with the whole class.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Watching and Discussing Reference 1 It is no denying that first impression is important. Neat and tidy appearance will give others very good impression about the person. It is pleasant to look at good- looking people. Good looking people are tend to be more confident and optimistic, and they are easier to be accepted when communicating with others.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Watching and Discussing Reference 2 We should judge a person by his or her ability rather than by their clothes. In work, a boss may miss out on a lot of capable persons if s/he only emphasizes appearance. In fact, the boss pays more attention to whether the candidate can fulfill the responsibility required by the job in question.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Debating Divide the class into two sides. One side is for the other part is against the following statement while: Should we follow the fashion? Affirmative sideffirmative side Negative sideegative side Book 4 – Unit 2

Viewing, Listening & Speaking The affirmative side 1. Fashion is a reflection of society and the times. It change as society and the times progress, we should keep pace with them too. 2. The world will become a dull place to live in if all people wear clothes of the same style and color. 3. Fashions make people look younger and more beautiful. This is exactly what young people pursue these days. 4. Fashionable people are usually popular with others and they can be accepted more easily. Book 4 – Unit 2 Debating

Viewing, Listening & Speaking The negative side 1. Fashion appeals only to those who don't have a real sense of beauty. 2. Top designers in Paris and London are dictatorial for they define the fashion and the whole world rushes to obey. 3. People sometimes look odd with the so-called fashionable hairstyles, makeup and dresses. 4. It lead to a waste when people throw away old things to follow fashion. Book 4 – Unit 2 Debating

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Who care more about their appearance, men or women? Do you think that men care more about womens appearance than women do about mens? Justify your answer. Idea Sharing Book 4 – Unit 2 Work in groups to discuss the following questions.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Book 4 – Unit 2 Sentences for your reference: In my opinion… It seems that many people … It certainly has many advantages/disadvantage, but… There seems to be a trend that… I think we might neglect some old people. For example… It seems to me that… There seems to be a lot of problems. For instance… As far as Im concerned… Idea Sharing Reference 1 >> Reference 2 >>

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Click to enjoy the video clip Who care more about their appearance, men or women? Book 4 – Unit 2 Idea Sharing

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Reference 1 I think men care about their appearance as much as women do. Actually nowadays everyone wants to be considered attractive. Men and women spend a great deal of money every year to improve their appearance by dyeing their hair, changing hair style and do skin care. They go on diets and go to health clubs in order to look more desirable. Obviously, the old saying, Vanity, the name is woman is no longer correct. Book 4 – Unit 2 Idea Sharing

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Reference 2 I think men care more about womens appearance than women do about mens. For women, a mans intelligence or his capacity to earn money is more important than his appearance. Women would not admire a man just because of his appearance. For men, things are quite different. No matter on what occasion, a beautiful woman can immediately attract mens attention. Like it or not, many men do think that beauty is the most important thing for a woman. Maybe they just want to be seen with a beautiful woman because it makes them feel more powerful. Book 4 – Unit 2 Idea Sharing

Viewing, Listening & Speaking Fun Time It all started about two years ago. In those days things were very different. I was overweight. I used to smoke a lotaout 30 cigarettes a day. I never got any exercise. I used to stay at home all day. I never went out into the fresh air, except to do the shopping. And even then I used to take the car. One day I looked at myself in the mirror. 'My God.' I thought. 'I look terrible! ' I tried to touch my toes. I couldn't do it. I found an old dress. I couldn't put it on. It was too small. Or rather, I was too fat! Book 4 – Unit 2 I. Enjoy a story Mrs. Laura Taylor is 45 but looks at least 10 years younger. Let's listen to her story.

Viewing, Listening & Speaking The next day I tried to jog a little. At first it was terrible. I mean I just couldn't run. Not even a short distance. And at first people used to laugh at me. 'Why are you running? Are you in a hurry?' they shouted. But now I've completely changed the way I live. I've stopped eating meat and I've started eating far more fresh vegetables. My husband and daughter have started that, too. At first they didn't like the new food. But they've changed. About six months ago I sold my car and bought a bike. Recently I've started doing yoga exercises. My husband often goes cycling with me now and my daughter jogs with me in the evening. They've both lost weight and are much healthier than they used to be, too. Fun Time Book 4 – Unit 2
