2 Principal: G Rowsell BA; Dip Ed; Dip Drama; Dip School Leadership I am very proud to be principal of Matamata College- a school that has 80 years of tradition, experienced excellent teachers, a good academic record, well resourced classrooms and a beautiful environment in which we learn. We are a school which provides a wide range of opportunities for academic, sporting, cultural and social growth and learning. We have a long tradition of welcoming international students to our school and we are seeking to develop this further. I believe international students who come to us with some of their countries traditions help our students learn more about the world in which we live while gaining an invaluable personal experience for themselves. 8 International students Matamata College welcomes international students who enjoy the schools safe and caring environment and the range of learning opportunities available to them. We have had students from Germany, France, China, and Japan. Quality education for all

9 International students Homestay All international students are required to live in a school-approved homestay. These homestay parents will provide a bedroom, meals and laundry and all homestay accommodation is regularly visited and checked by our Homestay Manager. All homestay parents are live-in family members over 18 years will be vetting by the NZ Police. Students have a wide range choice of type of homestay families. Quality education for all

10 International students Pastoral Care The College places a lot of emphasis on international students being well looked after. There is a Dean of International Students who is responsible for making sure students are happy at school, a Homestay Manager who is available 24/7 and an ESOL tutor who works with international students supporting them with their English and their learning. International students also receive support from the Guidance Counsellor and Career Advisor and we bring in same-language counsellors when required. Quality education for all

14 Guidance Counsellor – Mrs Kelleher Mrs Kelleher is available by appointment for students and parents. She deals with personal, relationship, career and academic issues. Quality education for all

15 Career Advisor – Mr Murray Mr Murray works with individuals, groups and classes assisting students with career pathway choices. He brings visiting speakers from the workplace and the tertiary institutions into schools to talk to groups and also arranges visits to Career Field Days and tertiary institutions Open Days. Quality education for all

16 Deans Deans are responsible for a horizontal level of students ( e.g. year 9 or year 13) They help students with option choices, class placement and also work with students on performance, discipline and career options. Deans liaise closely with teachers and also with parents when they are working with a student. They will often place a student on daily report to monitor his/her attendance, behavior and work effort. Deans are a good first point of contact for parents because they have the big picture view of a students performance and behavior. Quality education for all

17 House Leaders House Leaders are responsible for one of the schools four Houses. Each House contains approximately 200 students from year 9 to year 13 and the House Leader monitors attendance and uniform and assists the student leaders organise House activities and House assemblies. House Leaders liaise closely with group teachers, Deans, and the Deputy Principals. Quality education for all

18 Group Teachers Group teachers are the first point of contact for students. Group teachers meet their group class students every morning and are responsible for attendance, uniform, notices and monitoring the progress of the students in the group. Each group class has approximately 25 students in it from year 10-13. The year 9 students are in year 9 group classes. Students also have the option of joining the Whanau class which operates out of the Wharenui and has a Maori representative to the way it operates. Each group class is assigned to a house. 19 Principal – Mr Rowsell Mr Rowsell works closely with the Deputy Principals in setting a positive tone for the school and ensuring the high standards we set for student behaviour and achievement are met. The Principal also liaises with the Guidance team and reports to the BOT on student achievement, behaviour, issues, and successes out of the classroom. Learning Assistance The Deputy Principals, Mr Munro and Mrs Parish and the Assistant Principal Ms Mathews have overall responsibility for student welfare and behaviour. They liaise closely with Deans, House Leaders and the Guidance Staff and work proactively in fostering a positive tone in the school. They deal with serious breaches of our student behaviour code and liaise closely with parents and caregivers in this role. Quality education for all Deputy and Assistant Principals

28 Achievement Voucher Scheme Quality education for all We believe in encouraging and rewarding students for good work and positive attitude in and out of the classroom. Teachers will award achievement vouchers to students for variety of reasons. When a student has 10 of these they receive a canteen voucher of $5. At the end of each term, every student who has gained an achievement voucher goes in the draw for prizes that are announced at the final assembly for the term. ACE club ACE stands for Achieving and Celebrating Excellence and students who receive 3 excellences in assessments at any level go into the ACE club draw in terms 1-3 for a laptop.
