The Office of Information Technology Network Upgrade/IP Re-addressing 15 Minutes Dan Byrd Assistant Director Telecommunications and Networking

The Office of Information Technology Campus Network Upgrade A three year plan facilitating increased reliability, functionality and speed for the UTSA network

The Office of Information Technology Current State of the Network Current network design was initially deployed in Main Switches – A typical campus building has 1 main switch providing backbone connectivity to all areas of the building.

The Office of Information Technology Current UTSA Network Design

The Office of Information Technology Network Upgrade Benefits Increased Speed Ability to provide Gigabit speeds to the desktop - While the default connectivity provided to end users will remain at 100 Mb/s, the upgrade will provide a 10 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) backbone connection to each network closet within a building. This increased bandwidth will enable connection speeds of up to 1 Gb/s where required for research or other needs.

The Office of Information Technology Network Upgrade Benefits Increased Flexibility Traffic engineering – The new MPLS network will allow UTSA to determine specific paths for network traffic which will provide greater security flexibility. VLANs - With the current network design, departmental networks are limited to a physical geographic area. The new network will provide a wide range of options for extending networks across campus (VPLS, L3 VPN, etc.)

The Office of Information Technology New Network Design

The Office of Information Technology Flexibility Scenarios

The Office of Information Technology Campus Private Re-address Current network address scheme provides a class C public address space per network closet (250 hosts) Future network address scheme will provide a Class B private address space per network closet (500 hosts)

The Office of Information Technology Campus Private Re-address Each building will move into private address space as network equipment is upgraded. 10.x.x.x network will be used 10.1.x.x for JPL 10.2.x.x for SB Etc.

The Office of Information Technology Private Addressing NAT (Network Address Translation) Dynamic NAT translation for DHCP clients to x.x addressing Statically addressed systems can be 1 to 1 NAT translated as requested for public accessibility

The Office of Information Technology Private Addressing NAT (Network Address Translation) DNS changes will be made as necessary as public addresses are changed Administrative servers in JPL Operations will remain publicly addressed

The Office of Information Technology NAT Overview

The Office of Information Technology Network Project Overview Timeframe The network upgrade is being implemented over a 3 year time period ending December In year one the core network residing in the JPL datacenter as well three other main switches will be upgraded to support 10 Gb/s. In year two, seven main switches will be upgraded to support 10 Gb/s connections. In the final year, eight main switches will be upgraded to support 10 Gb/s connections.
