Mobile Lab Cart Management Jose R. Gutierrez Instructional Tech. Coordinator
Importance of Maintaining a Mobile Lab To have workable and efficient laptops To be able to integrate technology into lessons For students to be able to do different technology driven projects For different student population(s) to be able to check-out a mobile lab For students to feel confident and comfortable with the laptops
Most Frequent Laptop Problems Missing keys Graffiti or writing Broken monitors Detached charger cables Laptops not turning on or freezing Alteration of desktop or screen saver Missing or altered student work/files
Procedures for Distributing Laptops There are different ways a teacher can distribute the laptops from the mobile lab: 1. Have student monitors that will distribute the laptops to the class 2. Have students, by tables get their own assigned laptops 3. The teacher can set the laptops on the students desk, prior to the beginning of class *Laptops should always be carried with two hands at all times
Student Visual Inspection Before the students start working on their assignment, have them do a Visual Inspection of the following: Missing keys Graffiti Writing Vandalism Alteration of Desktop or Screen Saver Students are to report any problem(s) with their laptops immediately. If a student reports a problem with their laptop, the teacher needs to record the laptop problem into the Mobile Lab Problems Log. This way we are able to track the various different problems with each laptop.
Monitoring Usage of Laptops Teachers need to develop an efficient way to keep track of assigned laptops. This is going to vary, since some teachers are going to have enough laptops for each students and some teachers have to make their students share a laptop. There are different ways a teacher can do this: Print out a list of all the students names (alphabetically) and assign each student a laptop. Printing out a seating chart from Easy Grade Pro, and placing a number for each student. So, students will be assign the laptop by the number on their name. By numbering the tables/seats and assigning students corresponding laptops to the table/seat numbers (ex. The student in table/seat 5 will get laptop number 5).
Sense of Ownership If students know that they will be using a laptop over and over again, they will take pride in taking care & maintaining their laptop. When the seed of Sense of Ownership is embedded with the student, they tend to report all of the minor and major problems with their laptop.
Teacher Visual Inspection Teachers should allow the last 10 minutes of class to do a visual inspection, of the following: Missing keys Graffiti Writing Vandalism Desktop and Screen Saver have not been altered
Closing Procedures Have student monitors collect and place the laptops in their proper mobile lab slot & plugged them in Teacher makes sure that all computers are accounted for By the end of the day, all computes should be back in the mobile lab
