1 Submission Title: [TX Requirements for MPSK PHY]
Oct 2008 Project: IEEE P Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [TX Requirements for MPSK PHY] Date Submitted: [15−Oct−2008] Source: [Michael Schmidt, Frank Poegel], Company: [Atmel] Address: [Koenigsbruecker Str. 61, Dresden, Germany] Voice:[ , ], FAX: [ , ] E−Mail: Re: [ c] Abstract: [Discussion on EVM Requirements for the MPSK PHY] Purpose: [] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). 2 Oct 2008 Problem EVM is bound to 0.35. The MPSK constellation contains 7 non-uniformly distributed points in contrast to 4 uniformly distributed points for O-QPSK. For MPSK the smallest angle distance is pi/16. It is therefore conceivable to tighten the EVM requirements for the MPSK PHY. Michael Schmidt and Frank Poegel (Atmel)

4 Suppressing Ambiguities
Oct 2008 Suppressing Ambiguities In order to avoid phase ambiguities between the closest points, the maximum error should be bound to pi/32. Since the EVM is specified as an RMS error, the EVM should be considerably less than This can be very stringent and might be hard to achieve for low cost applications, especially due to the large crest factor. Michael Schmidt and Frank Poegel (Atmel)

5 Considering the Euclidean Distance
Oct 2008 Considering the Euclidean Distance Both PHYs, O-QPSK and MPSK, constitute (4,16) block coding, where the 16-length code words are dedicated chip sequences with chip values out of the corresponding complex signal constellation (either MPSK or O-QPSK). Both codes obtain similar properties in terms of the minimum Euclidean distance (5.4 for MPSK and 4.9 for O-QPSK). Hence, the receiver degradation due to EVM are similar, when applying soft-decision ML detection for decoding. Based on this, a maximum EVM of 0.35 is also reasonable for the MPSK PHY. Michael Schmidt and Frank Poegel (Atmel)
