LSST science support Richard Dubois SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Steve Allen Debbie Bard Dominique Boutigny Jim Chiang 27 Feb 2014 Seth Digel SLAC-NOAO f2f Tony Johnson Phil Marshall Risa Wechsler Dark Energy User Center
2 Executive Summary Proposal: » Create User Support Center at SLAC to serve LSST Dark Energy Science Community » Target elements of Center are simulations, science applications/analysis and access to computing Goals: » Hit the ground running with LSST data at First Light (2020) » Achieve high level of science productivity across DESC and the DE community, facilitated by the Center » KIPAC and SLAC becomes a recognized center for DE science and a go-to place for US research activity in this area » Synergies with campus (CS etc) are created, coupling computational ideas to exploiting physics potential » Significant computing cycles are devoted to DE at SLAC, at HPC centers and the GRID.
Primary User Center areas of expertise Simulations Tools: ImSim Use » Expertise on use and fidelity » Standard installation available » recipes for commonly used activities » Capacity for bulk running (e.g. bulk is millions of CPU hrs) » Storage of ImSim output data Data Reduction code: Data Management Stack Support » Consulting on use of DM stack » Standard installation available » recipes for commonly used activities » Postprocessing ImSim data Science Analysis Support » Documentation, tutorials and workshops » Collaboration, consultation and support for implementation and execution of DESC- specific analyses. » Collaboration with DESC in developing vision from ongoing tasks through the longer term Computing Resources » Provide access to midrange cycles (midrange is perhaps 10's-100's kCPU-hrs) » Provide access to bulk cycles 3
4 Elements Under Consideration Power users group concept, possibly for PhoSim, DM and OpSim User center support for PhoSim, DM – Help Desk Visitor programs Exchange programs, for user center staff to spend time at the NOAO sister center. Cadence workshop as example of user center support activity Community data support (e.g. DES public data hosted at NOAO) Computing support - access to cycles at all scales Synoptic Data Challenges - to test analyses, rather than just the low level reduction pipeline
