2 Goal: To develop our skills in efficiently collecting, sorting and organizing a range of stimulus media on to easily accessible boards for students on a specific topic. In this presentation we will look at a number of popular applications currently available to do this job, consider the functionality that these provide and challenge our thinking around what additional learning opportunities and benefits exist in utilizing these tools. We will then begin to explore how we can use Learni.st with those who wish to learn this option. Key Messages: -Process is the same regardless of application. -These solutions provide more than a substitution for textbooks but a range of additional learning opportunities. 3 Similar Process Different Tools Locate / Find Resources Specific search, shared links, student tasks, Google, Gooru, Scootle, professional networks… Add to the Appropriate Board Create a board for specific topics and add your found resources to the appropriate board. Sort and Refine Board Sort the order of the resources and add comments or instructions. Help Students Access Board Provide students with a link to the board ( , Daymap…) Set up a board and research to find the best content to publish on board – complete most of board before starting unit. Kick Start As you see stories, articles, videos on your day to day work/life – bookmark them by publishing to your boards – Social Networking is great for this. Ongoing Consider giving students research and responsibility to set up a board for a specific topic – head start? Teamwork / Collaboration. 4 NOTE: -Global2 – Blogs are also an excellent alternative. -EduClipper – new kid on the block – investigation required. Applications to Create your Board Well…. A couple of them anyway… OneNote The best all rounder!!! Vital teacher tool in 21C! Can be used for this plus more. Complex to understand full workings. Works off line – but links wont. ScoopIt Free, easy, seamless. Limited to five boards. Suggested items. LearniSt Pinterest for Education Free, easy… Customizable, lots of boards…. DayMap The old trusty?! Some set up for each class by default. Consistent across classes? Really only a links list. 5 There are different competing benefits and challenges with each application. Some Key ones to consider… Key Considerations Features to consider Some applications are easy to set up, others… not so. Complexity Often this comes as a trade- off as more complex applications may offer broader solutions. In addition to complexity to set up, the ease and time required to manage and refine content over the unit and school year should be taken into consideration. Maintenance Similar to Maintenance the ease and time required to add new content both during the unit and when on the fly during the year needs to be considered. Bookmark Some applications allow students to suggest or even add content. Student Input This process can assist the collaborative construction of knowledge. Some applications allow for easy posting of comments. This could be used to assess understanding and promote deeper learning. Comments Some applications are more mobile user friendly than others. Consider this for adding content and for the readers/users. Mobile Growing together as adaptable, confident, successful learners and citizens Digital Curation in The Classroom 21 October 2013

7 Take it to the Next Level SAMR Model This level of ICT integration adds significant additional functions and even change the purpose of the solution – allow for collaboration, feedback, constant update of current information, community input, text data analysis…. Transformation This level of ICT integration allows for replacing the non digital solution with a digital one and possibly some functional benefits – like searching content, backing it up, copying, sending… Enhancement Growing together as adaptable, confident, successful learners and citizens Digital Curation in The Classroom 21 October 2013

9 Collaborative Knowledge Construction Write some lines about your business Collective curation involves the collection of content and resources that represent the major or definitive views of the collective around a concept or an idea. Curation recognises that there are diverse opinions, ideas and approaches within the collective, and capturing and articulating these diverse views is crucial in representing the complete knowledge of the collective. Curation Synthesis involves blending of all arguments, considerations and points of views in order to clearly articulate an idea or concept Synthesis represents the collective understanding around a topic, not the authors point of view. Synthesis Collective Meaning Making is process by which a collective constructs new knowledge. Through shared negotiation, reflection and clarification, knowledge is first introduced and then accepted, often leading to new opportunities or areas of inquiry. Through experiences and reflection built upon previous agreements and shared understanding, new knowledge is integrated into the collective knowledge. This may be knowledge that gives a deeper understanding, knowledge that widens the implications or knowledge that identifies new implications previously not considered..
