Top Tips for Using Turnitin for Originality Checking and Online Marking A Quick Overview Humanities eLearning Team email@example.com
Common Turnitin support questions… We will answer these questions and more…. firstname.lastname@example.org STUDENT: I submitted the wrong document. Can I replace it with the right file? STAFF: How do I know who has and hasnt submitted?
The Turnitin Inbox Press Roster Sync link in the Turnitin inbox. – When you create the assignment – 2 days before the assignment due date – If you know class enrolments have changed STAFF: Why are some of my students missing from the Turnitin inbox list? email@example.com
Late submissions and extensions Yes, allowing for late submissions is recommended Tii alerts you to work submitted after the due date but does not automatically mark the submission down You can submit on behalf of the student should wrong settings be selected For extensions to coursework create a new assignment inbox for those affected. You can then – keep your 15 working days marking gap – maintain anonymity Q1 STAFF: Should I allow for late submissions? firstname.lastname@example.org Q2 STAFF: should students with an extension to their coursework submit into the main inbox?
Submission errors Yes, student can resubmit the correct file, but only if the Generate an Originality Report is set to: – on due date (strongly recommended setting) OR – immediately, can overwrite reports until due date (Can produce falsely high similarity indices). Otherwise staff can submit on students behalf, if necessary. STUDENT: I submitted the wrong document. Can I replace it with the right file? email@example.com
Proof of Submission Students get a digital receipt of their submission: – on screen in printable format. – via email. – and downloading a receipt Staff also get a copy of the receipt via the Turnitin inbox. STAFF: Do students get a receipt of their submission? firstname.lastname@example.org STAFF: How can I be sure a student really has submitted?
GradeMark Use the arrows to navigate through submissions Use UoM Quickmark sets or create your own Use General comments and/or provide audio feedback Make use of tools and workarounds in GM – Consider using Turnitin for Groups – Share Quickmark sets and develop a rubric – Come to an agreement on 2 nd marking principles (colour coding, initials etc) Q1 STAFF: How can I save time marking? email@example.com Q2 STAFF: How can we spread marking across a team?
Grades and Feedback Grades and Feedback are released together. When the setting is 'Release grades to students only on post date' then comments and grades are released on the post date. Tell your students the grades are provisional Students can view marks and feedback online so they can take full advantage of the interactive, pop-up comments on the web page. Students can also download their marked work STUDENT: Is my feedback released the same day as my grade? STAFF: How do students view their feedback? firstname.lastname@example.org
Marking with Rubrics GradeMark provides a type of feedback form called a Rubric Rubrics can provide more consistent feedback and may speed up the process. Students can access the Rubric online. If you use a Rubric you probably dont need a separate feedback sheet. STAFF: Can we use our existing feedback sheets in GradeMark? email@example.com
Anonymous Marking Students are asked to submit using their ID number in the submission title These can be traced back by administrators without lifting anonymity STAFF: How do I know who has and hasnt submitted? firstname.lastname@example.org
Have Students read their Feedback? email@example.com STAFF: How do I know if my students have read their feedback in GradeMark? Turnitin indicates whether a student has accessed their marked assignment.
Downloading Work and Offline Marking Offline marking is not currently available. An iPad app is in development. Turnitin does allow bulk download of marked assignments STAFF: Can I mark offline? STAFF: How can I download all of my students submissions? firstname.lastname@example.org
Roles, Access and External Examiners External examiners have no direct access to Turnitin, scripts are sent to them as an encrypted email attachment Course Leaders and the T.A. role has rights to mark Tii/GM work The Grader role DOES NOT STAFF: How can I provide the assignment submissions to an EE? STAFF: What role do I need in Campus Solutions just to be able to mark online? email@example.com
