Roger and Katie do feedback Watch and learn!
Roger and Katie do feedback What happened? What was the learner thinking and feeling? What was good and bad about the experience? What else could have been done/not done? How would you have done it differently?
Features of good feedback Timing Setting Positive focus Part of developmental dialogue Clarity about subject and link to overall development here and now Focus on behaviours which can be changed not personality
Features of good feedback Describes specific behaviours without evaluation or assumption of motives Uses I and gives your experience Suggest alternatives when giving negative feedback Be sensitive to the impact Encourage reflection Two or three key messages and summary
Some traps… Obligation Im duty bound to tell you this Moral high ground Its for your own good Bullying, fudging, diffusion Minimising Its not such a big deal, everyone does it at some time Collusion Youre probably right, perhaps I am overreacting Flavour of the month Youre not as good as some registrars I have had Forgetting the action plan
One model What do you think you did well? This is what I saw you do well Is there anything you might do differently in the future? This is what I think you might do differently in the future Have you any thoughts about how you might go about doing things differently? Here are some suggestions What do you think you might try first?
Your turn to have a go!
Receiving feedback Listen (rather than prepare a response/defence) Ask for it to be repeated if necessary Assume it is constructive Pause before responding Ask for clarification Accept it positively (consideration) rather than dismissively (defence) Ask for suggestions for change Respect and thank the person for giving feedback
