AdvoCaring Program I am much more comfortable at my site. I see that we are making a benefit to the under-served population. 15 Longitudinal Care The student at first viewed the patient as a tool; he would visit the patient, take his blood pressure, ask questions and leave. He was more concerned about checking off the boxes on his assignment and getting back to school for class. When the patient tried to talk to him about his hobbies; the student redirected the conversation to medical issues. At the end of the semester the relationship had changed completely. After reading the assigned articles and small group discussions, the student realized that the patient was not the one that should be doing favors for him, but rather quite the opposite. The student is there to serve the patient in whatever way is necessary. If that means talking about the American Civil War then that is what the student did and leave non-essential medical issues for another visit.

16 Longitudinal Care One student mentioned that she and her patient often pray together before each session. She believes that the spiritual connection made between she and the patient has caused the patient to open up and share tragic life events, such as the recent death of her 2 daughters. The student recognized severe depression in the patient, and has also seen a decrease in the apathy that the patient shows towards taking her prescriber's recommendations.

17 Longitudinal Care Another student said he used the technique of empathetic listening. His patients is a war veteran who seemed closed at first. In addition, the patient was not adherent to his asthma inhalers and his home seemed to be in disarray. The student found that he could relate to the patient, being ex-military himself. He found that using the first two sessions to relate to the patient simply by listening and creating small talk allowed them to build a bridge of trust. Now, the patient has a clean home, and he seems more aware of his therapy.

18 Longitudinal Care One of the students is working with a patient that had a long history of smoking with co- morbid diseases. She actually stopped smoking after the student has been working with her. What is interesting about this case is that she now is an inspiration for other women at WHC to begin the journey of smoking cessation because they were well aware of how much she smoked! The students have begun to share information with each other so that it can be used to benefit of their own patients.
