Gut-derived serotonin regulates bone mass accrual. LDL receptor related protein 5 (Lrp5) favors bone formation by inhibiting tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (Tph1) expression in enterochromaffin cells of the duodenum. Gut-derived serotonin, following its binding to Htr1B, inhibits Creb expression, which results in a decrease in Cyclin expression and osteoblast proliferation.
