Figure 1 | Anatomy of the femoral artery. The femoral artery originates from the iliac artery superiorly and bifurcates into the superficial femoral artery and profunda femoral artery inferiorly. Femoral artery access for percutaneous cardiac procedures is safest when the arteriotomy is in the common femoral artery above the femoral artery bifurcation and below the inferior epigastric artery.
