2 What is connotation? G Connotation is a suggested meaning of a given word. What is denotation? G Denotation is a basic or literal dictionary meaning of a word.

3 Are all words connotative and denotative? G No, some words are almost purely denotative. For example, it would be hard to find any positive, negative, or hidden meaning for the word telephone.

4 What are connotative words like? G Connotative words, however, are more like colors in a paint box. If you use them poorly, the result will be muddy and vague. If you use them well, you can express your ideas in a vivid or subtle way.
