Possible pathways for maintenance, repair, and regeneration of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), focused on pacemaker ICC associated with Auerbach’s (myenteric) plexus. All pathways are still at the stage of hypotheses. Immunohistochemical characteristics are largely based Lorincz et al.17 InsR, insulin receptor; IGF-IR, insulin-like growth factor I receptor. The “fibroblast-like cells” or fibroblast-like ICC27,28 may also have myoid features and may be Kit positive (see Torihashi et al30) and/or may have gap junction contact with smooth muscle cells and each other.27,28 Capability to generate pacemaker electrical slow wave activity is indicated by ().
