Figure 1 An example diagnostic test: positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) as a function of prevalence of disease. For any given test, the lower the prevalence, the lower the PPV. As inflammatory bowel disease is a low prevalence condition in the general population, * even a test with good sensitivity and specificity (>90%) may have a low PPV. ∗In populations with higher prevalence of disease (i.e., symptomatic populations with specific clinical characteristics and/or laboratory abnormalities) the PPV would differ.
