I HAVE CALLED THIS PRINCIPLE, BY WHICH EACH SLIGHT VARIATION, IF USEFUL, IS PRESERVED, BY THE TERM N ATURAL S ELECTION. - C HARLES D ARWIN, T HE O RIGIN OF S PECIES

T HINK -P AIR -S HARE Question1: What did Darwin observe about the characteristics of finches on different islands? Question 2: What does this tell us about natural selection and the adaptation of a species in relation to its environment?

L EARNING T ARGET : I will be able to show an understanding of Darwins natural selection by creating species fit for the environment given.

K EY 1. Climate: A: Hot and dry (example: desert)desert B: Hot and rainy (example: tropical rain forest)tropical rain forest C: Moderate temperatures and high rainfall (example: deciduous forest)deciduous forest D: Moderate temperatures and low rainfall (example: grasslands)grasslands E: Below zero temperatures (example: tundra)tundra 2. Terrain: A: Volcanic islands B: Swampy C: Mountains D: Flatlands E: Underground 3. Predators: A: Large birds of prey B: Humans C: Cheetahs D: Wolves E: Bears 4. Food: A: Fish B: Leaves of tall plants or trees C: Roots of plants D: Fast running animals E: Insects 5. Threats: A: Pollution B: Deforestation C: Disease, D: Not producing enough offspring E: Lack of food or water

D ISCUSSION Variation- species within populations exhibit individual variation in appearance and behavior. These variations may involve body size, hair color, facial markings, voice, or number of offspring. Inheritance – traits need to be heritable in order to be passed on to their offspring. Survive and reproduce - individuals possessing traits well suited for the struggle for local resources will contribute more offspring to the next generation. ion.html ion.html
