1 1.3 The Algebraic Order of Operations
Objective: Apply the algebraic order of operations. Standard Addressed: A: Complete calculations by applying the order of operations.

3 Grouping Symbols or Inclusion Symbols
Symbols like parentheses, ( ), brackets, [ ], braces, { }, and the fraction bar, –, are called grouping symbols or inclusion symbols.

4 Ex 1 3 – 3 Division 0 Subtraction 36 ÷ 4 • 3 Exponents 9 • 3 Division
Multiplication

6 2a. (30 + 4) ÷ 2 – 1 = 16 34 ÷ 2 – 1 =16 17 – 1 = 16 16 = TRUE!!!

7 b. Insert grouping symbols to make 80 ÷ 2 + 6 • 5 = 50 true.
80 ÷ (2 + 6) • 5 =50 80 ÷ 8 • 5 = 50 10 • 5 = 50 50 = 50 TRUE 

8 Ex. 3a Perform all the multiplication

9 Ex. 3b The height, in feet, of a falling object dropped from a height of 1000 feet after s seconds is given by 1000 – 16s2. What is its height after 5 seconds? 1000 – 16(5)2 1000 – 400 600
