4INTRODUCTIONArchitect Vitor Durão founded in 2001 his architecture office Vitor Durão - Arquitecto, Lda. where he develops his activity as a professional architect. He obtained his degree in architecture at Lusíada University – Lisbon in From 1997 to 1999 he participated in the PhD course in Architectural and Urban Renewal by the University of Seville. He obtained his PhD in architecture at that university in 2005 following the presentation of his doctoral thesis. He was also a university professor from 2005 to 2011, having coordinated urban analysis studies which were published in a book and various articles. 6QUINTA DA MINA BUSINESS PARK, DETAIL URBAN PLAN - AZAMBUJA (2011/…) The Quinta da Mina Business Park is located near the logistics and industrial area of Vila Nova da Rainha. It was designed to allow the development of small business units, in order to support existing logistics but also for IT companies. The plan adapts itself to the topography, fitting the hilly terrain. It is proposed for existing waterlines to be rehabilitated in a natural way, becoming a contribute to the improvement of the landscape. The plan has a total area of 31 hectares. The park itself has 12,8 hectares.
7SOCIAL HOUSING – URBAN DEVELOPMENT STUDY (Atlantic Steel Factory) - BENGUELA - ANGOLA (2010/…) The site plan was designed considering an urbanization model of semi-detached houses in small land plots. The backyards may contribute to food self-sustainability – they may be used to grow vegetables and fruit trees. In each urban module there would be a different block for social facilities, shops, a football picth and others.PORTFÓLIOOut. 2013
8TOWNHOUSE SITE PLAN - RUA 1 DEZEMBRO - CHÃO DURO - MOITA (2008/2011) This urban development is placed in one side of a new street. Mostly of the other side of that street is constituted by backyards of existing houses with its annex buildings. In this site plan it is proposed the creation of a sidewalk and parking in front of the new land plots, in order to obtain a visually consistent front in that side of the street, improving it. The site has 8300m2, and the plan divides it in 10 land plots for the construction of semi-detached townhouses, two in each plot. A public park was also designed, extending the one in the adjacent urban development.
9TOWNHOUSES – LAND PLOTS No TOWNHOUSES – LAND PLOTS No. 3, 4, 5 E 6 - RUA 1 DEZEMBRO - CHÃO DURO - MOITA (2010)This is one of the Townhouse designs created for this site plan. In order to be possible to connect the front and backyards, the design includes a covered passageway in the houses that share a party wall. In those cases the main entrance to the house is also in that passageway. The land plots have areas from 436m2 to 476m2. Each house has 330m2. Some have three bedrooms, while others have four.
10BUSINESS PARK - PALHAIS - BARREIRO (2008/2011) This business park was designed for the settlement of industrial, commerce and services units. Being close to a National Forest, there was a concern with its integration in the landscape and the topography, as well as to ensure the preservation of existing big trees such as cork and pine trees. The park has an area of m2, divided in 10 land plots.
11URBAN AND BUILDING RENEWAL - RUA 20 DE ABRIL - BARREIRO (2007/…) This projects aims the urban renewal of this urban area and surrounding buildings. It is proposed an improvement which includes a public park, planting of new trees, and the demolition of some existing buildings. It is also proposed the construction of new housing blocks as well as a nursing home for the elderly as detailed in the following pages. Area of the plan: ca m²PORTFÓLIOOut. 2013
12NURSING HOME FOR THE ELDERLY - RUA 20 DE ABRIL - BARREIRO (2007/…) Seven floor high building with basement with 40 room capacity and total built area of over 2000 m². The halls of the house are open to a small garden located next, which is made possible by an existing slope of the terrain. The size and volumetric s of the building is constrained by the conditions of the site, namely surrounding buildings location and height.
13HOUSING BLOCK AND PARKING - RUA 20 DE ABRIL - BARREIRO 2008/…) Housing block composed by buildings with separated accesses but a single parking garage. The buildings are composed by four room apartments and a smaller two room apartment, seventeen apartments in total. The land plot has an area of 1153 m². The project has a gross floor area of 3328 m².
14TOWNHOUSE SITE PLAN - SANTO ANTÓNIO DA CHARNECA - BARREIRO (2002/2009) This site plan for this land development project included the establishment of 17 land plots for the construction of two floor townhouses, as well as an isolated villa in an area of 5000 m². The proposed plan is designed as a natural extension of the existing urban fabric. There is however a different approach to urban design as it is proposed a street with green areas. In this street the houses have no front yard, but only back yard. The facade creates the street front.

16TOWNHOUSES, LAND PLOTS No TOWNHOUSES, LAND PLOTS No. 2, 6, 9 E 15 - SANTO ANTÓNIO DA CHARNECA - BARREIRO (2010/11)Design for the street corner. The main entrance and the garage entrance is in the side street so as to respect the green areas in the main street. In the yard there is a solar shading with barbecue. At the centre of the roof there is a skylight which allows for natural light to enter the room access lobby. Each land plot has an area of 150m². Each house has a gross floor area of 230 m², distributed by two floors with four rooms and a garage.
17TOWNHOUSE SITE PLAN WITH COMMERCIAL BUILDING - Rua dos Agricultores - CHÃO DURO - MOITA (2004/2008) This land development site plan is near the N11-2 Road but it is accessed by local streets. The original 17000m2 plot was divided in 25 land plots, one of them for the construction of commercial facilities and the other twenty four for semi-detached houses with one or two apartments each. Each new land plot has an area between 393m2 and 639m2. The gross floor area of the houses is between 200m2 and 315 m2. There is a public garden in the centre, near the commercial-purpose plot.

21AVELINO DA COSTA RODRIGUES SPORTS PARK - BAIXA DA BANHEIRA - MOITA (2005/…) This sports park is part of the larger riverside park of the town of Baixa da Banheira, particularly for the practice of football. The m² terrain was ceded by the municipality to local team UDCB. The complex includes the main stadium (with capacity for 2100 people, a pitch with artificial turf, changing rooms and gym); a training pitch with support facilities (changing rooms); a guardhouse; bar and children’s playground. A detail plan for the park and stadium was developed.PORTFÓLIOOut. 2013

23AVELINO DA COSTA RODRIGUES SPORTS PARK – STADIUM STANDS - PLANS The stands of the stadium are the main building of the park with capacity for 2100 spectators. There building includes changing rooms for athletes, referees and coaches, as well as a gymnasium, a warehouse and other technical facilities. The metallic access stairs for the public are opposite the pitch, through the exterior of the building, allowing for continuous stands. The ground floor area is 1386 m².
24OFICINA DOS SONHOS SCHOOL - PENALVA - BARREIRO (2009/2011) This school is located by the main road of the village of Penalva. It is located in a land plot with 812m², having a gross floor area of 624m², distributed along two floors. Public parking was created in front of the building, its facade being part of the street front. The various volumes that compose the building where designed taking in consideration programmatic and urban constraints. The main room may be used for meals and parties as well as a link to other rooms. It was particularly taken in account in the design of this school the importance of having enough natural light for the activities that take place within the building. The school includes a nursery, day care and pre school.

26OS BAITOLAS NURSERY - SANTO ANTÓNIO DA CHARNECA - BARREIRO (2002/2006) The two floor building already existed and it was a design constraint for various reasons. The building consists in three volumes and its height may be increased if necessary. In the interior, natural light for the nursery’s activities was a concern. For that purpose, a skylight was included at the lobby. Outside, the connection with natural elements in the surroundings was a concern. It includes nursery but also day care and preschool. The land plot has 1325m2 and the total built area is 471m2.

28FÁBRICA DAS BRINCADEIRAS NURSERY, REUSE OF WAREHOUSE (ANTIGA DESPENSA DA CUF) - BARREIRO (2003/2006) The project consisted in the adaptation of a notable building in Barreiro, located in the CUF neighbourhood, for a new use as a nursery. It includes also day care and preschool. A playground was created outside the building. Total built area: 630m2.
29RESIDENTIAL HOTEL ALEGRIA, REABILITAÇÃO DO EDIFÍCIO - PRAÇA DA ALEGRIA - LISBOA (1997/2010) The rehabilitation of this building started with the idea by the owner of improving one floor in time for the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition. The hotel attracted new costumers and the owner decided to keep improving and adapting the whole building, which included the installation of a new lift (see section). It was classified in 2010 as ‘Residential Hotel’.
30NURSING HOME FOR THE ELDERLY - E. N NURSING HOME FOR THE ELDERLY - E.N QUINTA DO PINHEIRO RAMUDO - PALMELA (2005/…)This project was designed for a 5053 m2 land plot near a highway, near another nursing home and a group of warehouses. The built area is 2660 m2. The building has 39 bedrooms as well as elderly day care facilities. The building is composed by two different volumes where distinct activities take place. In the ground volume there is a lobby, a social area, living rooms, meal room, kitchen, warehouse and health facilities. The bedrooms and small living rooms are located in the other two floors volume.
31NURSING HOME FOR THE ELDERLY – LAND PLOT No NURSING HOME FOR THE ELDERLY – LAND PLOT No MONTE DA VINHA LAND DEVELOPMENT - AZEITÃO - SETÚBAL (2004/…)The Monte da Vinha Land Development Plan consists of two-floor houses with ca. 200m2 each. We sought to integrate this building in its vicinity despite its size, and that the geometry and volume resembled that of the surroundings. Inside the plot a private and familiar garden area was created. The plot has an area of 1600m2 and the building has a gross floor area (above ground) of 1183m2. A detail design project was made.
33HOUSING BLOCK WITH SHOPS AND GARAGE - RUA GENERAL NORTON DE MATOS - BARREIRO (2000/2005) This Building is the conclusion to land development project “Os Cantinhos", started in the 1970s with five floor buildings. The area was previously occupied by a factory with a chimney. The project for this building took inspiration in the chimney without the intention to create a copy of it, but rather to create an emphasized form which is also an exceptional element within the city. The building is nine floors high above ground (the higher one being set back) and has also 2 underground parking floors. There is a total of 23 apartments and a shop in the ground floor. The gross floor area is 3039m2. A detail design phase project was developed. Building work inspections also took place.
34HOUSING BLOCK WITH SHOPS AND GARAGE - RUA GENERAL NORTON DE MATOS - BARREIRO (2000/2005) The ground floor plan is square shaped, while the other floor plans are the result of an intersection between a square and a circle. In terms of volume, the building form is the result of the overlapping of a prism and a cylinder, as it can be seen in the photographs of the building.
35HOUSING BLOCK- R. DA CRECHE / R. PROF HOUSING BLOCK- R. DA CRECHE / R. PROF. EGAS MONIZ – BARREIRO HISTORIC CENTRE (1997/2001)This project was designed for a location near an entrance to the historic centre of the city. It implied the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of a housing block and a townhouse. It was decided to adopt a aesthetical compromise between the integration with the image of the older existing buildings and an idea of contemporaneity in the smooth texture of the facades as well as in the concrete projecting cornice. There are balconies integrated in the roof which are part of the maisonette style apartments. The building is four-storey high and also has two floors below ground for parking.
36TOWNHOUSE - RUA PROFESSOR EGAS MONIZ – BARREIRO HISTORIC CENTRE (1998/2001) The townhouse is located in a corner, at the end of a row of existing houses, and has four storeys, one of them below ground.
37HOUSING BLOCK WITH SHOPS AND GARAGE- RUA ELIAS GARCIA - BARREIRO (2002/2008) The building is integrated in a city block and his five-storey high. One of the apartments is a maisonette and there is a parking basement. The ground floor is a shop. Land plot area: 238m2; gross floor area: 960m2
38HOUSING BLOCK WITH SHOPS AND GARAGE-- PRACETA DE PORTUGAL - BAIXA DA BANHEIRA (2007/2009) This project was designed for a plot in a corner, with an area of 315m2. The designed building will be four-storey high and will also have a parking basement. The ground floor is designed for shops. In the floor above there will be four apartments. The gross floor area will be 560m2.
39DETACHED HOUSE - CABANAS - PALMELA (2006/2012) This two floor house was designed from the idea of coexistence between two distinct experiences: a «closer» one, related to the interior of the house, and another one of search of the exterior, particularly to the larger backyard. The land plot has 4311m2 of area and the gross floor area of the house is 661m2. It is a five bedroom house, four of them with en suite facilities. There is a mezzanine in the living room, at the centre of the house. Between the lobby and the living room there is a narrow courtyard that allows natural light to enter the interior of the house.

42VILLA - PENALVA - BARREIRO (2006/2008) This villa in Penalva village took inspiration from local traditional houses as well as courtyard houses. The volume towards the front yard is elongated as in traditional houses and it is where the bedrooms are located. The shed roof of that volume emphasizes the resemblance with nearby houses. The next volume includes the living room which is open to the patio and is also the centre of the house. The land plot has 1116m2 of area and the villa has 250m2 of gross floor area including garage.

44DETACHED HOUSE 2- PENTEADO - MOITA (2009/2011) For many years, the owner’s residence used to be a farmhouse and it was replaced by this house. The main central volume of the new house has a dimension similar to that of the previous house. The house footprint is the same of the previous one in a higher part of the land plot, with a view for the valley that exists to the south. It was possible to built the volume as a whole, without breaks, in spite of the hilly terrain. The land plot has an area of 6500 m2 and the house has a gross floor area of 400 m2.

46DETACHED HOUSE 1 - PENTEADO - MOITA (2006/2008) The layout of the house was defined by various design considerations, including topography, solar exposure, the existence of an interesting group of large trees and the brief. It is a one story house, but the attic is also used. A mezzanine at the centre of the double-height living room provides access to the attic. The land plot has m2. The house has a gross floor area of 400 m2.

48TOWNHOUSES – LAND PLOTS No TOWNHOUSES – LAND PLOTS No. 1, 2, 3, 4 E 5 - QUINTA DA TORRE - PALMELA (2010/…)This group of townhouses is part of an urban development that consists of 16 land plots in Quinta da Torre. The location of the houses complies with the rules of the site plan, which allows the existence of a small front yard and a larger backyard. They all are two-storeys, four-bedroom houses. The land plots have 250m2 of area and the gross floor area of the houses is 230m2.
49DETACHED HOUSE - CHARNECA DA CAPARICA - ALMADA (2008/2011) The geometry of the plot, the desire of the clients to have a front yard, and local planning rules, constrained the footprint and the design of the house. This two-storey, three-bedroom house has an attic, a total gross floor area of 160m2 and a 30m2 annex which is used as a garage.
50DETACHED HOUSE- LAND PLOT No DETACHED HOUSE- LAND PLOT No. 2 - MONTE DA VINHA - AZEITÃO - SETÚBAL (2002/2008)This house was designed starting from a small central courtyard which is the most important element of the house, allowing natural light in circulation areas and interior rooms. The land plot has an area of 564m2 and the gross floor area of the house is 240m2.
51TOWNHOUSE- QUINTA DA LOMBA - BARREIRO (2004/2006) This house is located within a row of existing houses and the same volume and height were adopted for better integration with the surroundings. The facade is a composition of various plans, emphasized by the functional layout and different colours. The land plot has an area of 200m2 and the gross floor area of the house is 325m2. It is a three-storey, four-bedroom house with basement.
52DETACHED HOUSE- LAND PLOT No DETACHED HOUSE- LAND PLOT No MONTE DA VINHA - AZEITÃO - SETÚBAL (2003/…)This house is located in a triangular shaped plot which determined its footprint, form and design. The land plot has an area of 730m2. The five-bedroom house has a gross floor area of 280m2.
53TOWNHOUSE - LARGO DO OPERÁRIO - ROSÁRIO - MOITA (2004/2005) This project included an exercise in urban analysis about this area which originated a proposal for the reorganization of the facades of some of the houses near the intervened one. An approach of mimesis with older architectural styles was adopted. The garage gate is recessed so as not to clash with the overall design of the facade. A smooth texture was chosen for contemporainety. The elements of the cornice have a linear character for the same reason. The land plot has an area of 432m2 and the gross floor area of the four-bedroom house is 205m2.
54FOUR TOWNHOUSES - E.N. 11-2 - VILAS DO RIO URBAN DEVELOPMENT - CHÃO DURO - MOITA (2004/2006) Project of two two-storey semi-detached houses, each with two apartments and a gross floor area of 205m2 within 450m2 land plots. The three-bedroom apartments have an area of 102,5m2, which was a constraint in terms of form and layout. Together, the houses constitute a uniform set.
