1 Opening the Doors of Faith Icebreaker – How many doors have you come through today to be in this place/time/with these people/your experience of arriving here?Share with people near youIntroduction: sharing our faith story – we never stop being ‘inquirers’ : every experience/joy/sorrow.. Takes us to a new place of enquiry… like Peter standing outside the Gate… point of vulnerability.. Evangelisation takes place outside the ‘box’….Doors of faith are everywhere…Invitation to move into a new space, a different space…main room for prayer… invite you to Enter room consciously – What do you see, think, hear, experience, feel?Quiet music playing, the slide above is showing….
3 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. Luke 24:13-15Session Time: (One hour)In the Prayer Space: Quiet music playing (no words), large candle and prayer focus, a candle on each table and postcards of doors on each tableOPENING PRAYER:You go to your table…to sit… quietly…A word… we have come in, consciously aware of self… others… How does it feel to be in a new space… Exciting? Uncomfortable? Unsure..?Threshold is an ancient symbol of moving from one way of life to another, one way of thinking to another, one way of being to another… we have our life experience, our questions, our uncertainties, our vulnerabilities.. That is good… we are doing what Jesus did…Light the table candles….All are invited to choose a card on the table that says something about where you stand at present….coming through that DOOR…Share quietly with person next to you – why you have chosen this card…Taize chant (The Lord is my Light on previous slide) begins quietly… all encouraged to join… A CALVARY MOMENTProclaim Verses (this slide)Road to Emmaus picture: – permission to use sent to painting by John DunneJohn Dunne is a noted Irish painter. He and his wife are members of Nazareth Community in Dublin, Ireland. Throughout his career as an accomplished artist, John has traveled in many countries. He has absorbed influences from the Far East and the Mediterranean. His interests include theology and its relationship to art. He has a degree in theology. For many years he has worked on different themes which are based in literature. Two examples are childrens' games as played in Dublin during his childhood and the great legends of the Irish hero Cuchulain, interpreted by the Irish poet Thomas Kinsilla. More recently John has completed a major exhibition on the "Song of Songs" and is currently engaged with a series of ten large paintings based on the poem "Dream of Gerontius" by John Henry Newman.
4 Journal time… What have you left behind? What are you hopeful about? What are you discouraged about?Where do you stand?A CALVARY MOMENTJournal time - QUESTIONS in the JOURNAL (page 3) & on this slide (5-10m)Share with a neighbour – share only what you want to share…. (5m)A word leading to prayer:As we begin our time together, we ourselves stand at the door of faith, wherever that may be for us… Let us pray (silence)O Holy God, we trust in the companionship of the Holy Spirit, so often manifest in and through one another. Give us the courage to be open,… to look.. To listen… to think what we ask of God’s Church…. To reflect… on What faith offers us…. To enter deeply into our experience… to listen, to pray… to share our gifts… knowing that your kingdom is among us, and this is the way of faith along which Christ will lead us in love. We are prepared to begin this journey today under the guidance of Christ, and we make this prayer in the name of Jesus: AMEN.Sing once more – The Lord is my Light (next slide)
6 Setting the SceneHow does the story of Emmaus help us in the planning for this period of Evangelisation, and how can we best facilitate the enquiry process?....‘of no fixed duration or structure…an opportunity for the beginnings of faith’ (Outline for RCIA)What can Emmaus tell us about the VALUES of this period? Our subject for reflection and engagement in these days is the experience of the Enquiry Period – or the Period of Evangelisation and Pre-catechumenateFor both the Enquirer… and ourselves… as we stand at the door of faith, on the threshold together…There is a process… with many threads… a path with many colours… many world views, many expectations and hopes, mixed emotions…There is sometimes confusion in our hearts too… those who come with fragmented lives… a sense of lostness and uncertainty, vulnerability that often matches our own…Those who come asking for sacraments with no experience or knowledge of Christianity… what opportunities are there here? Those who come with deep yearnings… seeking meaning and purpose… they have seen something, experienced something… something that has been truly loving…Process of this period of Enquiry is often neglected… there is a huge danger of a cosy group sitting behind closed doors waiting, knitting… dreaming… hoping that there will be a flood of people washing up to the doorstep…FOUNDATIONAL premise of our gathering: the overarching question (click)… in a period rather scarily ‘of no fixed duration or structure…’…. What can the Emmaus story tell us about the Values of this period? What is Christ offering at each point in the journey…. What do we learn from Christ.. About the proclamation of the meaning of life!
7 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 13 Role of the team in the light of the Rite, 36,37,38,40,42 As a pastor… haven’t noticed No.40…..38: ‘help and attention’… to purifying a clearer intentionFaithful and constant proclamation of the living God**… tension: those who are not yet Christians…talking about unbaptised…Be careful… about ‘sin’ talkNotional Christian….The mix in the group/discernmentDon’t frighten them awayRecognition that ‘September – Easter’ has become expected pattern but requirements of this stage is MUCH longer….. Process… more than one year… tensions about time we give to peopleWe need a process of Evangelisation for those who are BAPTISED too! Some ‘Candidates’ – do not need a pre-catAdaptation and flexibility…CELEBRATING with the pre-cat – their spiritual well-being, with prayers/blessings with and for them… to welcome them well, as we do in ‘family’
14 Role of Team in light of RCIA (2) Providing environment for spiritual growth = key into this part of process38: opportunities provided to meet families and other groups of Christians…. (not an ‘RCIA meeting!) = spiritual growth and journey38: a suitable explanation of the Gospel – what does ‘suitable’ mean? Accessible? And get to know them first!Challenge in this story: recognising the unrecognised JESUS… those who come are CHRIST to us.. And we are witnesses to Christ too. ‘Suitable’ = knowing who Christ is….Build on sense = work of the HS.. We listen, enquirers listen… as Team we witness to Gospel. 42: Ad Gentes ‘Mission’… something has moved themRelationship, sense of prayer… sense of ‘church’ what are we initiating people intoWhat should Team be doing/what does Team do? In 36: ‘as a rule (the period )should not be omitted…’ and yet we don’t feel we have this period!!! Worrying! Basics missing!!

22 Luke 24:Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’Proclaim…. 29 Reverse Missionaries BBC Documentary DVD – Reverse MissionariesIntroduce it….Notice…Connections/insights?Drink and share…Relax and chat and insightsREVERSE MISSIONARIES intro..Nineteenth-century Britain was a golden age for Christian missionaries, who took the word of God around the globe to countries in which that religion remains and is now thriving. In a reverse of those great missionary journeys, idealistic modern-day missionaries travel to Britain to discover the historical roots of their faith and try to pursue their own missionary agenda in 21st-century Britain, trying to breathe new life into churches with declining attendance. Jamaican Baptist pastor Franklin Small is on his way to King's Stanley, a village in the Cotswolds. It is home to the oldest Baptist church in Gloucestershire, which is now threatened with closure. It was also home to Thomas Burchell, a missionary at the vanguard of the anti-slavery movement in the Caribbean.Pastor Franklin tries to bring some of his energetic Jamaican preaching style to the Cotswold community - but in the face of apathy, can he succeed in encouraging locals to embrace faith and take an interest in their church?Inspired by the life of his hero, Franklin also undertakes a fascinating historical journey, meeting Burchell's great, great, great grandson and paying his respects on the spot that he was baptised over 200 years ago

63 Table (buzz)From what we have heard and seen, how would we like the period of Evangelisation to be?POSITIVES to build onthen Everyone together….
64 We would like it to be….Storytelling and faith sharing, companionship we offer, listening and learning from the Gospel to be encouragedLearning about going back to the sources – real appreciation of this period… every member of the team should have a copy of the Rite itself …(sue!)God is at work in the story of the Enquirer, and our process moves at pace of the enquirer not as a ‘defined step’ in a book.Time and support is required… keep it simple…Rites and Blessings are appropriate to this period…CALL on the COMMUNITY ‘to help’..?Importance of LISTENING… and process itself based on Gospel stories.. TIME for the journey, taking TIME to have that process.. Ongoing, don’t bracket people in time/window.Its messy, indeterminate, no ‘one way’ = strength of the periodNo artificial structure, nothing imposed… whoever turns up..Gives us freedom, possibility to be surprised, a humbling and absorbing experienceLighten up this period – make it freer and more joyful, not tied to a ‘relentless process’.. Be joyfulAn OPEN period, enquiry goes on in many different ways, not necessarily in a structured group… keep the doors openNot putting obstacles in peoples’ ways too soon… don’t start there!Time developing spiritual life and calling on the community for this..All about relationship! “getting to know you… getting to like you and hope you like me…’ in song!!!
