Assessed work Common errors to avoid
Avoid Incorrect use of the apostrophe – see guidelines if you are unsure. Its important to know how to use the apostrophe. Guidelines are available at pdpskills.wikispaces.com/ Only referencing the lecture notes – avoid this; you need to evidence wider reading.
Avoid Using colloquial language – E.g. bin or been instead of being – E.g. as instead of has – E.g. av or of instead of have Using abbreviations such as doesnt or isnt – use does not or is not. Words such as vast or huge or immense – think about alternatives.
Avoid Using vague wording E.g. Its recently been noted that.... You need to give detail – how recent is recent? A month, a year, 5 years, a decade? Who noted it? Where was it noted
Avoid Making strong assertions that are not backed up by evidence or theory – E.g. Everybody knows that…
Frequently confused Confusion between: – where and were – there and their – Hear and here – Words that are correct in terms of spelling, but are the wrong word e.g. Role and roll, careers and carers
Please do Check grammar and spelling – really important to proof read your work but do not rely on the spell check – a word may be correct, but it may be the wrong word. Referencing conventions – important to use Harvard referencing
