1 Library training for the 1st year students Academic year 2012/2013

2 The aim of this training is preparation 1st year students to use the UITM library resources and services. The range of training includes issues like: the usage of UITMs computer library index (searching, ordering, reserving books, sending orders, checking your own account) basic rules concerning usage of library resources & services (regulations and fees) arrangement & collocation of the UITMs library resources basic sources and information services offered by the UITMs 2

3 Setting up a computer account Documents required to open a library account: the electronic students ID, in case of students doing postgraduate studies at the UITM the index book is the starting point to being put on the list, statement containing personal data of the reader with acceptation the library regulations and policies, just before opening the library account the reader ought to put his signature on the library card in order to confirm familiarity with the UITM librarys. 3

4 Library resources The profile of gathering library resources is fitted to the character of the school study specialization UITM librarys book base is divided into: books abstract journal special resources (maps, audiovisual & electronic materials) 4

5 The library has also access to full text science book databases as a part of EBSCOhost & ABI/Inform Global and ISI Emerging Markets portal CONTENT: contains bibliography descriptions with abstracts from at least 20.000 magazines titles, of which more than 10.000 are completed texts concerning science, engineering, information technology, economy,, management, business, agriculture, medicine, arts, sociology DATA RETRIEVAL: by magazines title (Publications option) by key words (basic & advanced retrieval) using subject index 5

6 CHRONOLOGICAL EXTENT: current and retrospective Notice: The newest periodical/magazine may be enabled by the publisher with delays (3, 6, 12 months) DATABASE CHARACTERISTIC: Academic Search Premier – multi-domain database containing magazines form a range of sociology, arts, science, engineering, information technology, art, literature Agricola – contains over 2,5 mln quotations from articles, Monographs, patents, reports concerning agricultural subjects and akin science Business Source Complete – database containing management, economy, finance, bursary and business area ERIC – bibliography database containing 980 magazines from education area Health Source - Consumer Edition – almost 190 full-text magazines and abstracts from almost 300 magazines from area of overall medicine, sports medicine, health protection, nutrition. 6

7 Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition – almost 600 full-text magazines and abstracts from almost 800 medical magazines Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts - (LISTA) contains indexes and abstracts from more than 600 magazines and books, science reports and other publications from domains like library study, classification, indexing, bibliometry, searching for information online, information management & much more. Archives in base are from the sixties of previous century. It is a database with extensive archives when it goes to library knowledge and information technology knowledge. MasterFILE Premier – multi-domain database. Contains overall information magazines connected with social topics, business, health protection, education MEDLINE – database concerning medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine including abstracts from more than 4.600 magazines NewsPaper Source Paper – access to full texts of more than 240 American and international newspapers Regional Business News – embraces 75 full-text American business magazines 7

8 EMIS Emerging Markets is a portal, which provides comprehensive information concerning emerging markets & concerns almost 60 Middle & East European countries, as well as Asian, Latin American, African countries & the Middle East. It indexes more than 9 thousand publications including valuable economic, finance & political press releases. The portal enables usage of full text press & agency articles, financial statement of plc. & Ltd., branch reports, information concerning plc. & Ltd., stock exchange quotation, statistics & macroeconomics data 8

9 Usage of the UITM librarys database Rules & policies regarding usage of the librarys resources states Library Code of PracticeLibrary Code of Practice Usage of the Lending library The reader can lend up to 6 library materials for a period of 1 month at once, with an opportunity of one extension for another month if other reader had not ordered the book. The reader can order any library resource after logging on to its own account in the OPAC directory. 9

10 How to order a book – self-help book Failing to meet the deadline of restoration is connected with consequences like: 1. individual reprimand generated onto the readers account 2. assessment of financial sanction – 4 PLN for every week of delay for every book, 3. freezing an account of the reader in the lending library up to the time of settling the liability for the Library Every reader can write, once in school year, a request to the Chancellor of the UITM concerning extinguishing liabilities. 10

11 In case of loosing or damaging lent books or library materials, the reader is obliged to: 1. buy the same book (the same author, title, year of release) or 2. pay all costs for repairing the book by a specialist 3. make a copy and bind the book or pay for this service in case the book is inaccessible or 4. bring other book which is being searched by the UITM Library as a priority or 5. pay a proper compensation for loosing or destroying a book which is twice amount of claim 11

12 Usage of the reading-room the collection of the UITM Library is available for all interested readers by the reading room after setting a computer account which enables access to OPAC directory every time you come to the Reading-room, give any of your ID with photograph to on- duty librarian Some books which i.e. work in volume form cannot be taken with the reader beyond the Reading-room without asking the on-duty librarian 12

13 Survey of literature which is gathered in the UITM Library You can find all the information about the Library resources in OPAC WWW dictionaryOPAC WWW OPAC helps to find in a very fast way plenty of different information in PROLIB system from the librarys resources for readers and other users who have access to the internet. You can find all survey information on OPAC WWW website 13

14 All readers using the Readers-room are obliged to obey some basic rules: leave your jackets, covers, bags in the cloak room give your ID anytime you enter the reading-room in order to start using library materials library resources can be ordered not later than 30 minutes before closing the reading-room attentive usage of all books, magazines and other materials tell the on-duty librarian about every damage you notice in the book keep quiet in the Reading-room, turn off your mobile phone before entering the reading-room, dont start a loud conversation when you are in the reading-room, do not eat when you are in the reading-room, youre not allowed to take any library resources with you beyond the reading- room without asking the librarian, you ought to obey all the tips and suggestions given by the librarian 14
