March 2008 doc.: IEEE /0219r4 May 2008 New PAR: scope proposal The scope of this project is to define an amendment that shall define standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) so that modes of operation can be enabled that are capable of supporting: A maximum infrastructure BSS throughput of at least 1Gbps as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Multiple communications at the same time Below 6GHz carrier frequency operation excluding 2.4GHz operation and ensuring backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE802.11a/n devices in the 5GHz unlicensed band. May 2008 Intent behind this new scope proposal The current new version intends to address the feedback received on the previous documents. Changelog is: Constrain to a single set of devices to eliminate multichannel complications Remove IBSS to constrain/bound to infrastructure relevant data flows Remove DiL considerations to focus on infrastructure BSS Do not distinguish between DL/DiL/UL Result = concentrate on the parts that will allow VHTL6 to make a difference and be unique Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom)

Option 1: lower the peak rate in the PAR scope wording straw poll result: 500Mbps: 14, 750Mbps: 3, 1Gbps: 45 Indicates that 1Gbps should be the target! Option 2: make the throughput metric optional in the scope wording e.g.: An optional mode providing a maximum infrastructure BSS throughput of at least 1Gbps as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Option 3: add an explanatory note to detail in which specific configuration the throughput constraint must be met e.g.: The infrastructure BSS throughput is defined as the sum of the MAC SAP throughputs across all active transmissions within the BSS The 1Gbps maximum BSS throughput is to be achieved when considering a BSS with at least 3 simultaneously actively-communicating STAs Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom)

6 May 2008 Explanatory notes The infrastructure BSS throughput is defined as the sum of the MAC SAP throughputs across all active transmissions within the BSS. The 1Gbps maximum BSS throughput is to be achieved when considering a BSS with at least 3 simultaneously actively-communicating STAs. Examples of candidate technologies that will contribute to achieve the targeted throughput encompasses space/time/frequency multiplexing: SDMA, OFDMA, Multi-User MIMO ( transmissions and network coding.
