2 Figure 1 Antibiotic-Induced Changes in Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Ly6Chi Monocytes When adult mice are treated with antibiotics, the levels of hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive performance decrease, but they are amendable to partial restoration following probiotic treatment that recolonize the gut flora. Correlatively, the levels of Ly6Chi monocytes in the bone marrow, blood circulation, and the brain decrease following antibiotics treatment. Providing a mechanistic link for monocytes in this gut-brain axis, adoptive transfer of Ly6Chi monocytes could rescue hippocampal neurogenesis levels in antibiotics-treated mice, and depletion of monocytes from the blood circulation reduces hippocampal neurogenesis.
