Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. Etive Currie Development & Regeneration Services GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL 13 th September 2012 DELIVERING AN ASSET BASED APPROACHDOING RATHER THAN GATHERING EVIDENCE COMPREHENSIBLE MANAGEABLE WORTHWHILE LONG TERM CULTURAL CHANGE AND PLACEMAKING FOR EVERYONE This is About Doing things With People…. Local People are the Experts.

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. It is hard to feel on top of life if you know that where you live is looked down upon, if you know that you are treated less well because of where you live, if you know people think less of you because of where you live. 3 Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. Glasgow City Test Site…… Our test site focuses on integrating health and wellbeing into the planning system which includes placemaking, developing healthy sustainable neighbourhoods and placing communities more in charge of their local environments. We have been working with partners in Public Health and have been developing work relating to health impact assessment, working with community members using a co-production assets approach (where by the community are equal contributors and they bring all their assets and skills to the table). The team have developed (or are testing) some great innovations, including: ~ Building on work started in the East End Local Development Strategy which included a health impact assessment at a very early stage.

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. Glasgow City Test Site…… ~ Innovative community consultation work using scrapbooks and focusing on quality of life issues. ~ A health girl cartoon strip – which uses art and humour to challenge the silos professional groups often find themselves in!

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. ~ CALTON STREET AUDIT: Working with Living Streets Scotland we carried out a street audit on the local Community Area Associations Plan for Change. The Street Audit involved professionals from different departments within Glasgow City Council (DRS, LES, etc); public health practitioners and people who stay there. We have now started working a series of green space, public realm, access/movement and lighting projects. The projects are jointly funded by Green space/ENV 2 and Equally Well monies. The risk here is that we are not including the entire community and have only captured the Calton Area Associations view. Key task is to become more inclusive and get more local people involved. Glasgow City Test Site……

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. Glasgow City Test Site…… ~ Curries Healthy Sustainable Neighbourhood (HSN) Model – which puts people at the heart of the model. The main part of the model is a nine piece jigsaw which represents spatial planning themes. The HSN Model addresses the complexity of planning and the development process, and assists in the process of quality placemaking by informing decisions. ~ An electronic tool (HSN Placemaker) which can be downloaded or used online to generate discussion about placemaking and health & wellbeing, allowing people to improve environments and think about how this makes them feel and initiate conversations between local people and planning and built environment professionals. www.hsnplacemaker.comwww.hsnplacemaker.com

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. COMPREHENSIBLE MANAGEABLE WORTHWHILE EFFECTIVE NURTURING, CONSISTENT PARENTING ALLOWS A SENSE OF CONTROL TO DEVELOP. THE ENVIRONMENT BECOMES STRUCTURED AND UNDERSTANDABLE. OPPORTUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION ALLOWS SOCIAL NETWORKS TO BECOME RICHER, SELF ESTEEM TO DEVELOP AND A SENSE OF CONTROL IS FURTHER ENHANCED. RESOURCES TO MANAGE THE ENVIRONMENT BECOME ESTABLISHED. THROUGH HAVING A SENSE OF PURPOSE, HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIOURS BECOME EASIER TO ADOPT. WORTHWHILE MANAGEABLE COMPREHENSIBLE Source: Aaron Antonovsky Elevated Markers of Stress -- Associated with Elevated Risks of Chronic Ill Health Psychological Resilience – Sense of Coherence. Bounce-Back-Ability BUILDING COMMUNITIES SHOULD FOCUS ON: -- BUILDING CAPACITY. -- POSITIVE ASSETS OF PEOPLE. -- POSITIVE ASSETS OF PLACE. SALUTOGENESIS…..

Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012. Anthony Morgans: Asset Model for Public Health…… THEORY OF SALUTOGENESIS ASSET MAPPING ASSET INDICATORS A. EVIDENCE BASE B. ACTION C. EVALUATION Many policies FAIL in the ACTION stage and never make it to Implementation. Need to focus on WHAT WORKS and HOW THINGS WORK. ONE SIZE – DOES NOT FIT ALL – there are cultural variations, socio-economic variations, etc. to consider in terms of how things work. Communities ARE NEVER BUILT ON THEIR DEFICIENCIES.
