A Fundamental Ethical Issue in the Resource Management of Healthcare
Healthcare Management in the United States of America A basic and persistent social issue in healthcare management is the allocation of healthcare resources. Healthcare resources are not unlimited. A fundamental ethical issue is whether, or to what extent, the allocation of healthcare resources is fair and equitable.
Healthcare Resources (1) The most salient consideration concerning the adjudication of the distribution of healthcare resources is whether such resources are construed to be: commodities in a capitalistic economic system, or social goods in a democratic governmental system.
Healthcare Resources (2) To date, the interpretation of healthcare resources, as commodities in a capitalistic economic system, has dominated, and has resulted in monopolistic practices by the health insurance industry, which will continue to exist even under the auspices of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 after its full implementation. A reconsideration of healthcare resources, at least in part, as social goods in a democratic governmental system, might result in significant improvements in the healthcare of Americans, both in terms of the quality of such care and in the percentage of Americans who have access to such care.
