1 TDW-11: 24-28th April 2017, Noumea, New Caledonia
OnBoard Longline logsheet tablet/phone app TDW-11: th April 2017, Noumea, New Caledonia

2 Overview OnBoard Application What is OnBoard? What does it do?
How does it work? Benefits of OnBoard

3 What is it? OnBoard SPC E-reporting app for Android
Designed for Longline logsheet reporting on vessels An alternative to old paper forms Available in English, French and Chinese Android

4 How does it work? What is the workflow?
Captain creates a trip when leaving the port Each day activities are added and catch recorded There’s inbuilt data quality checks to ensure good data If required, a daily update can be sent via satellite internet The captain completes and signs the logsheet upon returning to port and submits the trip. It is instantly available in Tufman 2. Handheld satellite devices exist and have some reasonable internet subscription packages. Challenges may exist in locking down the device so that it can’t be used for expensive facebooking or other nefarious activities.

5 How does it work? What are the tech details?
Android app, available in the Google Play store Fully secured through user accounts (pin codes and programmatic checking soon) Linked to SPC’s Tufman 2 database Enter data offline, upload whenever internet is available It could with some work be made available on iOS but we would need to invest a bit in getting the software compliant for the apple store.

6 On the left is the home screen with a graphical menu
On the left is the home screen with a graphical menu. Captains start a trip then fill out an entry every day for fishing, transiting or other activities. On the right is the screen for entering activities. We make use of the phone or tablet’s hardware features such as allowing the captain to take the GPS position from the tablet. If the captain is unhappy with the position, or entering the information a few hours after the set then manual entry is still possible. The interface is designed to be big and bright to eliminate tap mistakes.

7 The catch is entered using quick buttons for common species, or for less common species the captain can search by code or common name. After the trip is complete, the captain signs the logsheet using a stylus or by dragging his finger. This is to satisfy compliance regulations and to ensure the captain remains responsible for the content of the logsheets.

8 Translated into Chinese, with English for any untranslated labels or captions.
The French translation is complete. The Chinese translation is about 2/3 complete with English failsafes.

9 Tails Phone or Tablet Internet < 10KB (about the size of a
“are the fish biting?” . Pretty simple, you’ve all seen e-reporting before… but OnBoard uses compression to allow very small data transfers in getting daily logsheet updates from the vessel at sea into the national database. The size is very very small, about the size of a simple , or maybe even less. Tufman 2 Database

10 Benefits OnBoard aiding fisheries data collection
Easy to use and learn Still works on bad internet or totally offline Daily reporting possible at sea Data quality checks for better data Multiple language support Updated and improved all the time

11 What’s possible? OnBoard in the future
Integration with regional QMS and CMS rollouts Other gears such as pole and line and purse seine Other forms such as observer workbook and position reports Even more DQ checks to eliminate legibility errors Include other languages for DWFN In summary, OnBoard
