1 Curriculum Night Mathematics Tyler Honeycutt and Brian Frees

2 How is this curriculum different? While many of the same concepts will be taught from the NC Standard course of study, the level of thinking has changed dramatically! The Common Core for Mathematics has three major components: Focus Coherence Rigor

3 Focus The former curriculum was often branded as being a mile wide and an inch deep. By teaching a shortened list of power-concepts at each grade level, teachers can deepen the level of mathematical thinking on any given concept. The ultimate result: More connections can be made to real-world problem solving.

4 Coherence The creators of the new curriculum set out to make sure that the concepts taught at one grade level significantly added to the foundational concepts of the next grade. The Common Core is now more appropriately aligned to other content areas (science, social studies, etc) to support student thinking in these classes.

5 Rigor Students are asked to think in multiple ways by: Explaining their solution process in depth using multiple strategies Working on long-term projects that require multiple layers of problem-solving

15 What can I do to help my child at home? Help them see word problems in everyday situations. Let them help you calculate tips at restaurants. Show them how to calculate and plan for the phone bill, electric bill, etc. Use charts and diagrams from the paper or your business to help show connections to statistics. Let them help you calculate area, volume, surface area when completing projects around the house.
