3. About ECFMG
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) was founded in 1956 as a private, nonprofit organization with a primary goal to certify the readiness of international medical graduates for entry into graduate medical education and health care systems in the United States through an evaluation of their qualifications and credentials.
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates was founded in as a private, nonprofit organization and was established to:
provide information to and answer inquiries of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) planning to come to the United States for Graduate Medical Education;
evaluate IMGs’ credentials, knowledge of medicine, and command of English; and
certify that IMGs have met certain medical education and examination requirements.

We primary source verify medical education credentials for applicants, regulatory authorities and other external clients

5. The Paper Process Graduate/Medical School sends diploma to ECFMG
ECFMG sends “Verification of Medical Education” Form to medical school by mail or courier (photo, release and diploma)
Medical school completes form
Certifies diploma
Attaches transcript
Medical School returns verification and documents to ECFMG by mail or courier
Talk about the paper process being lengthy due to the lack of international mailing standards.

6. The Electronic Process
ECFMG uploads the request to the ECFMG Medical School Web Portal (EMSWP)
Medical School processes the request in EMSWP
Views photo & release
Certifies diploma
Completes questions about medical education
Uploads transcript
Medical School submits the verification to ECFMG through EMSWP
