Film/Book Analysis Essay An analysis examines the parts of a subject to create an understanding of how the different elements contribute to an aspect ascribed to the entire subject.
Psycho Example :
Thesis Statement Hitchcock, long associated with films of of mystery and horror, has created a masterpiece of suspense in the film Psycho most significantly through his use of the haunting musical score, through his creation of a dark and foreboding atmosphere, and through the depiction of the character of a violent killer in the guise of an unassuming quiet man.
Organization In the body of the paper address each aspect of the film which contributes to making it a masterpiece of suspense. Start with the musical score. Explain how the musical score is aligned with the action in the creation of suspense as in the famous shower scene. Give further examples of how the music enhances the suspense in the film.
Atmosphere Discuss how the set design, the use of light and shadow and other elements in the story create a backdrop for the horror and suspense.
Character Discuss elements of the character of the killer, his words, his actions, and other features which make him a frightening individual and a dangerous villain.
Discussion You may discuss each of the elements which make the film one of the hallmarks of suspenseful films with several paragraphs describing different ways in which the music, the atmosphere, and the central character contribute to the film. Be sure to use unified and organized paragraphs and employ transitions between paragraphs.
