3 LANES NOTES Definitions Branch-Circuit Selection Current. The value in amperes to be used instead of the rated-load current in determining the ratings of motor branch- circuit conductors, disconnecting means, controllers, and branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protective devices wherever the running overload protective device permits a sustained current greater than the specified percentage of the rated-load current. The value of branch-circuit selection current will always be equal to or greater than the marked rated-load current.

5 LANES NOTES Definitions Rated-Load Current. The rated-load current for a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor is the current resulting when the motor-compressor is operated at the rated load, rated voltage, and rated frequency of the equipment it serves.

8 LANES NOTES Ampacity and Rating. The size of conductors for equipment covered by this article shall be selected from Table through Table or calculated in accordance with as applicable. The required ampacity of conductors and rating of equipment shall be determined according to 440.6(A) and 440.6(B).

9 LANES NOTES 440.6(A) Hermetic Refrigerant Motor- Compressor. For a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor, the rated-load current marked on the nameplate of the equipment in which the motor-compressor is employed shall be used in determining the rating or ampacity of the disconnecting means, the branch- circuit conductors, the controller, the branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protection, and the separate motor overload protection. Where no rated load current is shown on the equipment nameplate, the rated-load current shown on the compressor nameplate shall be used.

10 LANES NOTES Exception No. 1: Where so marked, the branch- circuit selection current shall be used instead of the rated-load current to determine the rating or ampacity of the disconnecting means, the branch- circuit conductors, the controller, and the branch- circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protection. Exception No.2: For cord-and-plug-connected equipment, the nameplate marking shall be used in accordance with (B),

11 LANES NOTES Single Machine. An air-conditioning or refrigerating system shall be considered to be a single machine under the provisions of , Exception, and , Exception. The motors shall be permitted to be located remotely from each other.

12 LANES NOTES Disconnecting Means General. The provisions of Part II are intended to require disconnecting means capable of disconnecting air conditioning and refrigerating equipment, including motor compressors and controllers from the circuit conductors.

13 LANES NOTES Rating and Interrupting Capacity. (A) Hermetic Refrigerant Motor-Compressor. A disconnecting means serving a hermetic refrigerant motor compressor shall be selected on the basis of the nameplate rated-load current or branch-circuit selection current, whichever is greater, and locked- rotor current, respectively, of the motor- compressor as follows. (1) Ampere Rating. The ampere rating shall be at least 115 percent of the nameplate rated-load current or branch circuit selection current, whichever is greater.

14 LANES NOTES (b)(1)(b) The locked-rotor current equivalent to the horsepower rating of each motor, other than a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor, shall be selected from Table (A) or Table (B), and, for fan and blower motors of the shaded-pole or permanent split-capacitor type marked with the locked-rotor current, the marked value shall be used. The locked-rotor currents shall be added to the motor-compressor locked-rotor current(s) and to the rating in amperes of other loads to obtain an equivalent locked-rotor current for the combined load

16 LANES NOTES (c) Small Motor-Compressors. For small motor compressors not having the locked-rotor current marked on the nameplate, or for small motors not covered by Table , Table , Table , or Table , the locked-rotor current shall be assumed to be six times the rated-load current.

17 LANES NOTES (d) Disconnecting Means. Every disconnecting means in the refrigerant motor-compressor circuit between the point of attachment to the feeder and the point of connection to the refrigerant motor-compressor shall comply with the requirements of

18 LANES NOTES Cord-Connected Equipment. For cord-connected equipment such as room air conditioners, household refrigerators and freezers, drinking water coolers, and beverage dispensers, a separable connector or an attachment plug and receptacle shall be permitted to serve as the disconnecting means.

19 LANES NOTES Location. Disconnecting means shall be located within sight from and readily accessible from the air conditioning or refrigerating equipment. The disconnecting means shall be permitted to be installed on or within the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. The disconnecting means shall not be located on panels that are designed to allow access to the air conditioning or refrigeration equipment.

21 LANES NOTES Application and Selection. (A) Rating or Setting for Individual Motor Compressor. The motor, compressor branch-circuit short circuit and ground-fault protective device shall be capable of carrying the starting current of the motor. A protective device having a rating or setting not exceeding 175 percent of the motor-compressor rated-load current or branch circuit selection current, whichever is greater, shall be permitted, provided that, where the protection specified is not sufficient for the starting current of the motor, the rating or setting shall be permitted to be increased but shall not exceed 225 percent of the motor rated-load current or, branch-circuit selection current, whichever is greater.

22 LANES NOTES (c) Protective Device Rating Not to Exceed the Manufacturer's Values. Where maximum protective device ratings shown on a manufacturer's overload relay table for use with a motor controller are less than the rating or setting selected in accordance with (A) and (B), the protective device rating shall not exceed the manufacturer's values marked on the equipment.

23 LANES NOTES Multimotor and Combination-Load Equipment. The ampacity of the conductors supplying multimotor and combination-load equipment shall not be less than the minimum circuit ampacity marked on the equipment in accordance with 440.4(B).

24 LANES NOTES Application and Selection. (A) Protection of Motor-Compressor. Each motor compressor shall be protected against overload and failure to start by one of the following means: Overload relay that is responsive to motor compressor current at no more than 140 percent of the RLA A thermal protector integral with the motor compressor, approved for use with the motor compressor that it protects on the basis that it will prevent dangerous overheating of the motor compressor due to overlaod and failure to start. Fuse or inverse time circuit breaker responsive to motor current.

25 LANES NOTES Application and Selection. (B) Time Delay. The short-circuit and ground-fault protective device protecting the branch circuit shall have sufficient time delay to permit the motor- compressor and other motors to start and accelerate their loads.

26 LANES NOTES Provisions for Room Air Conditioners General. The provisions of Part VII shall apply to electrically energized room air conditioners that control temperature and humidity. The provisions of Part VII cover equipment rated not over 250 volts, single phase, and such equipment shall be permitted to be cord-and attachment - plug -connected.

27 LANES NOTES Grounding. The enclosures of room air conditioners shall be connected to the equipment grounding conductor in accordance with , , and Branch Circuit Requirements (b) Where No Other Loads Are Supplied. The total marked rating of a cord-and-attachment-plug- connected room air conditioner shall not exceed 80 percent of the rating of a branch circuit where no other loads are supplied.

28 LANES NOTES Disconnecting Means. An attachment plug· and receptacle shall be permitted to serve as the disconnecting means for a single-phase room air conditioner rated 250 volts or less if (1) the manual controls on the room air conditioner are readily accessible and located within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the floor or (2) an approved manually operable disconnecting means is installed in a readily accessible location within sight from the room air conditioner.

29 LANES NOTES Supply Cords. Where a flexible cord is used to supply a room air conditioner, the length of such cord shall not exceed 3.0 m (10 ft) for a nominal, 120-volt rating or 1.8 m (6 ft) for a nominal, 208- or 240-volt rating.

31 LANES NOTES Equipment Fastened in Place or Connected by Permanent Wiring Methods(Fixed). Exposed non – current carrying metal parts of fixed equipment likely to become energized shall be connected to the equipment grounding conductor under any of the following conditions:

32 LANES NOTES (cont.d) (1) Where within 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically or 1.5 m (5- ft) horizontally of ground or grounded metal objects and subject to contact by persons (2) Where located in a wet or damp location and not isolated (3) Where in electrical contact with metal (4) Where in a hazardous (classified) location as covered by Articles 500 through 517 (5) Where supplied by a metal-clad, metal-sheathed, metal- raceway, or other wiring method that provides an equipment ground, except as permitted by ,Where equipment operates with any terminal at over 150 volts to ground

33 LANES NOTES (c) Motor Frames Motor frames, as provided by Equipment Connected by Cord and Plug. Under any of the conditions described in (1) through (4), exposed non-current- carrying metal parts of cord-and-plug-connected equipment likely to become energized shall be grounded.

35 LANES NOTES Types of Equipment Grounding Conductors. The equipment grounding conductor run with or enclosing the circuit conductors shall be one or more or a combination of the following: (1)A copper, aluminum, or copper – clad aluminum conductor. This conductor shall be solid or stranded; insulated, covered or bare; and in the form of a wire or busbar of any shape. (2) Rigid metal conduit. (3) Intermediate metal conduit (4) Electrical metallic tubing

36 LANES NOTES Types of Equipment Grounding Conductors. (5) Listed flexible metal conduit meeting all the following conditions: (a)The conduit is terminated with listed fittings. (b)The circuit conductors contained in the conduit are protected by overcurrent devices are rated at 20 amperes or less. (c) The combined length of flexible metal conduit and flexible metallic tubing and liquid tight flexible metal conduit in the same ground return path does not exceed 1l.8m (6 ft.)

38 LANES NOTES Identification of Equipment Grounding Conductors. Unless required elsewhere in this Code, equipment grounding conductors shall be permitted to be bare, covered, or insulated. Individually covered or insulated equipment grounding conductors shall have a continuous outer finish that is either green or green with one or more yellow stripes except as permitted in this section. Conductors with insulation or individual covering that is green, green with one or more yellow stripes, or otherwise identified as permitted by this section shall not be used for ungrounded or grounded circuit conductors.

40 LANES NOTES Size of Equipment Grounding Conductors. (A) General. Copper, aluminum, or copper- clad aluminum equipment grounding conductors of the wire type shall not be smaller than shown in Table , but in no case shall they be required to be larger than the circuit conductors supplying the equipment.

42 LANES NOTES Connection of Grounding and Bonding Equipment (a) Permitted Methods. Grounding conductors and bonding jumpers shall be connected by one of the following means: Listed pressure connectors Terminal bars Pressure connectors listed as grounding and bonding equiment Exothermal welding Machine screw – type fasteners Connections that are part of a listed assembly
