1 “Your Solution for Source Sampling Equipment”

2 Introduction to Source Sampling
Apex Instruments, Inc. offers an extensive line of equipment and supplies for sampling stationary source emissions for pollutants in accordance with US EPA Reference Methods. The majority of the methods are generally classified as either Isokinetic or Gaseous Sampling Methods. During Isokinetic Sampling the sample rate is adjusted proportional to the source flow rate, while with Gaseous methods the sample is normally pulled at a constant lower rate. Many of the gaseous methods can be conducted using the Isokinetic equipment with the proper accessories. A partial list of some of the methods are listed on next pages.

5 Typical Sources Tested Using Apex Instruments Equipment:
Acid Plants, Municipal Waste Combustors, Asphalt Plants, Petroleum Refineries, Boilers, Power Plants, Cement Plants, Pulp & Paper Mills, Chemical Manufacturing, Smelters, Furnaces, Steel Mills, Incinerators The Apex Isokinetic Source Sampler System allows the operator to monitor gas velocities, temperatures, pressures and sample flow rates for maintaining Isokinetic sampling conditions. During an isokinetic test, parameters, including gas velocity and temperatures, are periodically monitored and the sampling rate adjusted so the velocity in the nozzle opening equals the velocity of the approaching stack gas to obtain an unbiased particulate sample. Isokinetic testing requires a thorough understanding of the first five test methods presented in the CFR 40 Part 60 Appendix A. While US EPA Method 5 provides the general protocol for operating the sampling train to collect a representative sample, US EPA Methods 1 through 4 prescribe techniques underpinning the sampling activities associated with Method 5. Together, these methods outline the basic protocols for determining particulate concentrations (grains per dry standard cubic foot or milligrams per cubic meter), as well as emission rates (lbs/hour or kg/hour). Method 1 Determines sampling location and traverse points. Method 2 For determination of stack gas velocity and volumetric flow rate. Method 3 Used for determining CO2 & O2 concentrations and dry molecular weight. Method 4 Determination of moisture in stack gases. Method 5 Used in conjunction with Methods 1 thru 4 for determining particulate emissions from stationary sources.

6 Click here for more information on Method 5 Sampling Train.
The basic Method 5 sampling train is easily adapted to test for many other gaseous and particulate parameters of interest from stationary sources. Parameters of interest may include metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins/furans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particle size distributions and an ever increasing group of pollutants tested for by adaptations of this basic test method. While the different methods are designated by other US EPA or agency method numbers, they are variations of Method 5 procedures such as: different impinger solutions, the use of organic resin traps, different filter media, temperatures or a range of alternative procedures. The Apex Isokinetic Convertible Method 5 Intermediate Sampler System provides a reliable and versatile foundation for performing most isokinetic testing methods. The Convertible Intermediate Sampling System is designed for the professional who must perform test after test at various locations in an efficient manner. The system can be used in the standard rigid or flexible arrangement. The Convertible Intermediate System is designed to provide maximum efficiency and the best value for your money. The Deluxe Glassware Set allows for speedy changes between runs. Click here for more information on Method 5 Sampling Train.

The impinger train requires the SB-4 impinger case, glass nozzles, probe liners and non-metallic union. The method has been validated for the collection of 17 different metals. Click here for Method 29 on the web.

28 Click here to go to Method 201A and PM10 on the web.
Method 201A- PM10 Method 201A applies to the in-stack measurement of particulate matter emissions equal to or less than an aerodynamic diameter of nominally 10 microns, PM10, from stationary sources. A gas sample is extracted at a constant flow rate through Apex Instruments cyclone, which separates PM greater than PM10. PM less than PM10 is collected on the in-line filter. In order to maintain a cut size of 10 microns in the cyclone, the flow rate must be maintained at a constant, discrete value during the run. Our cyclone meets the design specifications of Method 201A and allows use of the equations in Method 201A to calculate the constant sample flow rate. 29 Method 201A- PM10 continued Apex Instruments’ CI-700 Cascade Impactor is an in-stack, multi-stage cascade impactor which can attach to standard EPA and ASME particulate sampling trains and specifically used for measuring the particle size distribution in stationary emissions. The Model-700 cascade impactor consists of seven impactor stages that can separate particle from 0.2 to 17 micron diameter (aerodynamic), solid or liquid, into eight size classifications which can be used later for weighing or chemical analysis. Lightweight disposable collection plate inserts of stainless steel foil allow improved weighing precision and reduce the need for extra sets of collection plates. A Cyclone Precollector (PRA-K), used at the inlet of the impactor not only reduces the particle bounce and re-entrainment problems but also minimizes the chances of particle overloading at the first impaction stage. The precollector allows for right angle sampling and for the cascade impactor to be inserted through a standard port. The precollector kit includes 6 nozzles, from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch diameter, and the connecting tube. The precollector can attach to most commercially available impactors. Sold separately. Particle Sizing Data Reduction Software This Windows-based Cascade Impactor Data Reduction System (WINCIDRS) calculates particle size distribution of stack particulate matter (PM) taken with the Mark III Impactor as well as particle-sizing cyclones. Developed by stack particle analysis experts, this software reduces the time and chances of error involved with reducing particle sizing data. 42 Flow, Pressure and Temperature Measurement

43 3-D Flow Measurement System
The Apex Instruments 3-D Pitot is capable of measuring yaw and pitch of non-uniform flows. The yaw angle is determined directly by rotating the pitot to null the pressure across a pair of symentrically placed ports on the pitot head. The yaw angle is measured with a remote inclinometer attached to the probe extension and digitally displayed on the console. The pitch angle is calculated using probe specific calibration curves. The average gas volumetric flow rate in the stack or duct is then determined from the average axial velocity. The Apex Instruments 3-D Console is used in conjunction with the 3-D Pitot to determine velocity pressure and the yaw and pitch angles of the flow velocity vector in a stack or duct according to the new US EPA Method 2F (the determination of stack gas velocity and volumetric flow rate with three-dimensional probes). The MC-3D52 console features differential pressure transducers that are exceptionally stable and reliable. The transducers are NIST certified to ±0.5% accuracy. The pressure transducers can withstand extreme overpressure for the most demanding stack testing conditions. A convenient purge pump, quick connects, temperature display and all voltage outputs are available for easy connection to your data acquisition system. 3-D Pitot 3-D Console Click here for more information on the 3-D Flow Measurement System.

44 Click here to go to Type “S” Pitot tubes on the web.
The Type “S” Pitot tube is constructed from two formed tubes with each leg or port on the same plane but facing opposing directions. The theory is based on when the pitot is faced into the gas stream flow the pressure difference between the two ports equates to the velocity pressure, DP. This differential velocity pressure is measured with devices, such as liquid manometers or electronic pressure transducers. Sampling Location US EPA Method 1 is performed to locate an appropriate sampling location to complete a velocity or particulate traverse. The sampling locations must meet certain criteria to be valid such as, the duct diameter size and the sampling location relative to flow disturbance locations to ensure laminar, non-cyclonic, flow in the stack. Velocity Measurement US EPA Method 2 is performed to determine the average stack gas velocity from measurement of the gas density and average velocity head using Type “S” (Stausscheibe or reverse type) pitot tube. Apex Instruments manufactures and guarantees Type “S” pitot tubes in accordance with the Method 2 design specifications. However, calibration is not standard with purchase of pitot tubes. Apex Instruments offers calibration equipment and services. Click here for details. A variety of materials, sizes and configurations are available. The most common are constructed from either 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch OD Stainless Steel or Inconel 600 tubing. Click here to go to Type “S” Pitot tubes on the web.
