THE VIZAG STORY THE THREE DISTRICTS OF VIZAG, SRIKAKULAM AND VIZIANAGARAM ARE HABITAT TO 1,16,00,000 PEOPLE. AROUND 1,65,000 SUFFER FROM CATARACT… AROUND 800 CHILDREN ARE BLIND… (Visakhapatnam is well known by its short name as Vizag)
THE GOOD NEWS 60 % OF THE WORLDS BLINDNESS IS TREATABLE. 20% IS PREVENTABLE. NEEDLESS BLINDNESS CAN BE ELIMINATED FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH IF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE HAVE ACCESS TO SIGHT-SAVING MEDICAL AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUES.
A RAY OF HOPE In 1997, a Ray of Hope came in the form of Mr A Sankar Rao. Moved by the plight of the poor, He founded the Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital on the 7 th of June 1997 at Vizag. Mr A Sankar Rao, the Founder and Managing Trustee of Sankar Foundation, had a successful business career before he directed his energy towards this noble cause.
A RAY OF HOPE He had to drop out of school and start earning even at the early age of 14 as the family was literally in dire straits.
A RAY OF HOPE He worked hard and started business in Ship Chandelling and later diversified into Timber Trade, Construction and Real Estate.
A RAY OF HOPE His last business venture was the construction of 5 star 100 Room Hotel Viz., GRAND-BAY. He sold it away in May 1995 to Adayar Gate Hotels, Madras which is now being operated by Welcom Group Hotels. Grand Bay, Vizag

A HAVEN FOR THE POOR 60 % OF THE SURGERIES ARE DONE FOR THE POOR, WHICH ARE FREE OF ANY COST. FREE CAMPS REACH OUT TO EVEN THE MOST INTERIOR OF VILLAGES. BY MAY,2007 432 OUTREACH CAMPS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED.
Sir John Major, the former British Prime Minister visited Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital on the 9 th of March, commended its work and laid foundation stone for the new Hospital building.

LIGHTING UP YOUNG LIVES SANKAR FOUNDATION HAS UNDERTAKEN A MAJOR INITIATIVE TO COMBAT CHILDHOOD BLINDNESS BY CONDUCTING SCHOOL SCREENING CAMPS. 85822 SCHOOL CHILDREN HAVE BEEN SCREENED FOR REFRACTIVE ERRORS TILL MAY 2007 AND 1469 SPECTACLES WITH RESILENS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED FREE OF COST!

LIGHTING UP YOUNG LIVES THERE ARE 12,800 ANGANWADI CHILDREN IN THE URBAN SLUMS OF VIZAG. SANKAR FOUNDATION HAS SCREENED ALL OF THEM AND ISSUED SPAECTACLES TO 477 CHILDREN SANKAR FOUNDATION HAS DISTRIBUTED VITAMIN A CAPSULES TO 9153 ANGANWADI CHILDREN OF URBAN SLUMS TO PREVENT AVOIDABLE BLINDNESS.

THE NEXT BIG LEAP THE EVER INCREASING PATIENT NUMBERS MEANT THAT SOON THE LEASED PREMISES OF SANKAR FOUNDATION INSUFFICIENT. RECOGNISING THE SERVICES OF SANKAR FOUNDATION, THE GOVT OF ANDHRA PRADESH HAS ALLOCATED 2 ACRES OF LAND AT SIMHACHALAM, VIZAG. A STATE OF THE ART EYE HOSPITAL IS BEING CONSTRUCTED IN THAT LAND. The Next Big leap The Hospital is going to be a 150 bed state-of -the art facility which will serve the 10 million poor population located in the three districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram & Srikakulam and from the districts of neighbouring states of Orissa and Chattishgarh.
A MAJOR MILESTONE Sir John Major, former British PM, along with Mr Mervyn Davies, Group CE of Standard Chartered Bank graciously performed the ground breaking ceremony for the New Hospital Project on the 9 th of March 2005.
A MAJOR MILESTONE Sir John Major came to Sankar Foundation as part of filming a documentary on blindness for BBC. He was astounded at the quality and magnitude of work being done and was all praise for the hospital staff!
