Development of Computer Role-playing Games for Geotechnical Construction WANG, Yu Building and Construction Department TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Background and motivation Objectives and Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) –Demo Effectiveness assessment What I learnt Outline TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Students/kids are obsessed by computer games –wii, psp, on-line games etc How to motivate student learning? –Use the vehicle of computer games Most geotechnical structures (piles etc ) are underground and invisible, difficult to illustrate their construction process –Use computer graphics and animations in the games Background and Motivation TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Develop computer role-playing games (CRPGs) to facilitate students in learning construction technology related to geotechnical engineering, which is a major component in the curriculums of the Building & Construction Department Course BC3618/F Construction Technology –CILOs Construction Engineering Management (CEM), Structural and Geotechnical Engineering (SGE), Surveying (BSS) programmes Objectives TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

A computer role-playing game (CRPG) is a type of computer game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters and collaboratively follow stories –One example: Monopoly Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines Within the rules, players can improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games CRPGs TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Construction principles and requirements are taught in lectures Students play the CRPGs Upon successful completion of the games, students understand the games system rules and guidelines, which are reflection of the construction principles and requirements, and are able to achieve the CILOs TLAs TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Submit passwords –Obtained after completion of the game –Game completed within time limit –Different for each student On-line survey –Helpful for learning? –Best feature? –Improvement? Effectiveness Assessment TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Q: In general, I have found the computer games are helpful for my learning of construction technology related to geotechnical engineering ? TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

Students enjoy playing the games Helpful for student learning Enjoyable to work with student helpers and programmer Difficulty in hiring programmer –Students (CS4367/5367 Computer Game Design) –Full-time programmer –Students ( Creative Media) What I Learnt TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)

TDG project No. 6000139 EDO Mr. Ricky Chan (BC Dept) Dr. Howard Leung (CS Dept) Mr. PO, Wing Pong (Programmer, Creative Media student) Mr. LAM, Yee Kan (Helper, BC student) Mr. TSANG, Fann Fung (Helper, BC student) ACKNOWLEDGMENTS TDG Project No. 6000139 PI: Dr Yu Wang (BC)
