2 10/12/2018November 2007 November 2007 doc.: IEEE /2752r1 January 2008 Abstract This submission is a discussion if multicast/broadcast enhancements should be put in VTS SG PAR Scope. Jun Li, Thomson Inc. Peter Ecclesine, Cisco Systems

3 January 2008 Motivations IPTV and mobile TV are one of most interested video applications emerging to the market that cannot be supported well without multicasting enhancement Multicasting is addressed in various IEEE802 task groups in their scopes 802.1Qat: SRP supports one-to-many multicasting 802.11v: multicasting session diagnosis is a major function 802.21: to form a SG for handover between DVB and 802 radios 802.16: Multicasting / broadcasting service (MBS) is a key feature Management packets are usually using multicasting It is hard to address unicasting only without addressing multicasting in order to have a consistent amendment for video transport in coordination with other working group efforts With multicasting effort mentioned explicitly can provide our 5C with stronger differentiation Jun Li, Thomson Inc.

4 Issues to be addressed 802.11 multicasting is weak
January 2008 Issues to be addressed multicasting is weak No link rate adaptation, some AP simply fixed at lowest rate No priority for multicasting over unicasting No power-saving support How to work together with other working groups TGv / TGk for link adaptation 802.1Qat … for bridge with QoS support Jun Li, Thomson Inc.

5 Work to do Desired features can be minimized
January 2008 Work to do Desired features can be minimized Link rate adaptation: 1) rate selection through API, or 2) algorithm based on TGv diagnosis results, no more difficult than unicasting link rate adaptation Giving multicasting and/or AP downlink priorities: similar mechanism as described in extended EDCA Most enhancement problems for unicasting can and should also apply to multicasting without much difficulty The effort in VTS should be no more difficult comparing with other groups, 802.1Qat-SRP end-to-end QoS, TGv multicasting diagnosis, m MBS Power-saving can be optional There are compatibility issues but it is considered in TGv as well. We can leave it open without explicitly mentioning in PAR. Jun Li, Thomson Inc.

6 January 2008 Decision Should the phrase “Enhancement of multicast/broadcast for video streams with improved link reliability and QoS” be part of PAR? Jun Li, Thomson Inc.
