3 DETERMINING WHETHER OR NOT TO DROP A CLASS Students usually have 8-9 weeks (during a 16-week semester) to drop a class with a W grade. This window of time allows a student to find out his progress on say, the first two exams of the semester (and possibly a midterm grade), prior to making an informed decision about whether to drop. Because too many W grades can affect financial aid eligibility, caution and good judgment should be used when deciding whether to drop a class. However, if exercised on limited occasions, a W (vs. an F) can make a big difference in a semester GPA.
