(Presented by the Christadelphians) 5. Prophecies Concerning the Jews and Israel (1)

2 The Jews - God’s special people
“ You are My witnesses,” says the LORD, And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. ” (Isaiah 43:10) Also see Deuteronomy 7:6-8

3 The Olivet Prophecy (1) Jesus Predicted the Scattering of the Jews
“ But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations ” (Luke 21:20-24) This fulfillment began in AD70 when the Roman armies destroyed Judea and scattered the Jews into all nations.

4 The Olivet Prophecy (2) The Occupation of Jerusalem
“ And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. ” (Luke 21:24) Since AD70, Jerusalem has been dominated by other nations. The city was finally repossessed by the Jews during the “Six Day War” in 1967.

5 The Olivet Prophecy (3) Jesus is Coming!
" Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. "Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. " (Luke 21:27-28) The Signs for our generation: Jerusalem occupied by Jewish People Distress of Nations Fear of the outcome of the world

6 The Olivet Prophecy (4) “Look at the Fig Tree” Luke 21:29
The Fig Tree represents ISRAEL – see: Jesus said that when the Fig Tree (Israel) buds once again, the Kingdom of God is near: “Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. ” (Luke 21:32) Joel 1:7,12, Hosea 9:10, Jeremiah 24:1-8, Matthew 21:18-21

7 Moses predicted the scattering of Israel
“Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other” (Deuteronomy 28:64) “I will scatter you among the nations and draw out a sword after you; your land shall be desolate and your cities waste.” (Leviticus 26:33) For nearly 1900 years, the Jewish people were scattered, without a homeland

8 Persecution of the Jews in other lands
“You shall have no power to stand before your enemies . . . You shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.” (Leviticus 26:37-38)

9 Persecution of the Jews (Some examples)
AD70: 1,100,000 Jews killed by Romans in the siege of Jerusalem - 97,000 taken into captivity. AD315: Emperor Constantine decrees “Christianity” as the state religion - issues several anti-Jewish laws AD613: Jews persecuted in Spain. AD1096: 12,000 Jews killed in Germany at the beginning of the first Crusade against the Muslims. AD1181: French King Phillip expelled the Jews from his domain. AD1290: Jews were banished from England AD1298: Persecution of the Jews in Franconia, Bavaria and Austria - 100,000 Jews killed. AD1321: Jews were accused of having incited outlaws to poison wells in France. 5,000 Jews were burned at the stake

AD1348: Jews were blamed for the Bubonic plague throughout Europe, especially in Germany - thousands of Jews killed. AD1478: Pope Leo III directs Spanish Inquisition against Jews AD1492: Expulsion of the Jews from Spain - 300,000 left homeless and robbed of all money & possessions. AD1540: Expulsion of Jews from Naples and 10 years later, from Genoa and Venice. AD1794: Restriction of Jews in Russia - forced to serve 25 years in military. Hundreds of thousands of Jews leave Russia. AD1903: Frequent pogroms (massacres) of Jews in Russia. AD1933: Commencement of persecution of Jews in Hitler Germany. Inception of the systematic destruction of 6,000,000 Jews throughout Nazi-occupied Europe

11 The Jewish Holocaust “You shall have no power to stand before your enemies (Leviticus 26:37)

12 The Jewish Holocaust “and as for those of you who are left, I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies ” (Leviticus 26:36)

13 However, Moses predicted the Regathering of Israel
“ The LORD your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the LORD your God has scattered you Then the LORD your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.” (Deut. 30:3-5)

14 Regathering of the Jews (Some prophecies)
“For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.” (Jeremiah 30:3) “Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the ends of the earth . . .” (Jer 31:8)

15 Regathering of the Jews (Some prophecies)
“He who scattered Israel will gather him ” (Jer 31:10) “Thus says the Lord GOD: “I will gather you from the peoples, assemble you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.” (Ezekiel 11:17)

17 The meaning of the vision
Dry Bones = Scattered Israel “ these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off! ” (Eze 37:11)

18 The meaning of the vision
Assembling of the bones = regathering of the Jews to the land of Israel. “ Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. ” (Eze 37:11) “Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel “ (Eze 37:21-22)

20 Bones come together First Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland, on August 29-31, 1897 led by Theodore Herzl, “In Basle I founded the Jewish state... Maybe in five years, certainly in fifty, everyone will realize it.”

Dear Lord Rothschild: (Jewish leader) I have much pleasure in conveying to you. on behalf of His Majesty's Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet: His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country. God’s breath entering the body = The Jews will recognise their true God. “ I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and performed it,” says the LORD.’” (Eze 37:14)“

“I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.” (Ezekiel 36:22)

Survival in other countries: “For I am with you,’ says the LORD, ‘to save you; Though I make a full end of all nations where I have scattered you, Yet I will not make a complete end of you.  But I will correct you in justice, And will not let you go altogether unpunished.” (Jeremiah 30:11)

A persecuted people: “And you shall become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all nations where the LORD will drive you.” (Deuteronomy 28:37)

A nation again: The Jews had gathered from over 140 countries to form the nation of Israel in 1948 “For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.” (Ezekiel 36:24)

Rapid population growth: 1856: 500 Jews 1948: 657,000 Jews 2006: 6,000,000

Regeneration of the land: Many parts of the land of Israel have been transformed from a wasteland into very fertile regions.

A Prosperous nation: Israel’s GDP in 2006 was $30,000 per person compared to $5,000 in Arab countries.

37 The Future of Israel “At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem.” (Jeremiah 3:17)

38 The Future of the Jews See Zechariah 8:22-23
