HFIA Workshop Wideband HF spectrum availability A quick practical approach

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #2 / 15 Introduction : first predicates Information extracted from April 2013 sampling Band monitored : 2-30 MHz In the region of Toulon (France) Samples taken in 150 Hz increments during 2- hours frames 2 hours for technical and stability reasons (better representativity of statistical availability) Minimum and mean noise is computed +/- 48 kHz around the central frequency except for 2.000 f < 2.048 MHz, and 29.952 < f 30.000 MHz Channel considered « free » if no signal is detected 10-dB over mean/mini. noise level Note: Data is available for the last 10 years !!

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #3 / 15 3-kHz channels availability (over mean/min.)

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #4 / 15 6-kHz channels availability (over mean/min.)

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #5 / 15 12-kHz channels availability (over mean/min.)

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #6 / 15 24-kHz channels availability (over mean/min.)

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #7 / 15 1st conclusions… Mean noise floor around 48 kHz was retained over minimum noise floor for statistical representativity 3-kHz free channels represent 23.28 % of the whole band 6-kHz, 12-kHz and 24-kHz give respectively 17.18%, 11.05 % and 7.61 % availability However : this is without considering LUF-MUF

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #8 / 15 2 nd predicates… (1/2) Considering LUF-MUF To be representative of real-time situations 2 scenarii : One « tactical » link (500 km) between Toulon and Cagliari One « long way » link (2.700 km) between Toulon and Suez Power output : 10 W (considering a 400W input power dispatched over 16 3-kHz channels with a 2.5x backoff) Computed using CNET (Télécom Bretagne) Point-à-Point software with 80 % reliability

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #9 / 15 2 nd predicates… (2/2) Toulon SuezToulon Cagliari

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #10 / 15 3-kHz channels availability over mean 9.54 channels available per hour per MHz

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #11 / 15 6-kHz channels availability over mean Only 42.03 % rentability compared to 3- kHz channels Only 19.51 % rentability compared to « all HF spectrum » 2.80 channels available per hour per MHz

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #12 / 15 12-kHz channels availability over mean Only 12.43 % rentability compared to 3- kHz channels Only 16.26 % rentability compared to « all HF spectrum » 0.46 channel available per hour per MHz

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #13 / 15 24-kHz channels availability over mean Only 2.90 % rentability compared to 3- kHz channels Only 7.09 % rentability compared to « all HF spectrum » 0.07 channel available per hour per MHz

French MoD – DGA TN 11/FEB/2014Slide #14 / 15 Main conclusions… Total number of 3 kHz-channels * hour: (30 MHz – 2 MHz) / 3 kHz * 24hours = 224.000 Channels available during 2 hours : 3-kHz :4.358100 % 6-kHz :1.279( = 2.558 * 3-kHz)58.7 % 12-kHz :209( = 836 * 3-kHz)19.2 % 24-kHz :31( = 248 * 3-kHz)5.7 % 3-kHz channels usability is very low 3.9 % availability amongst total (4.358*2hr/224000) Fragmentation of the HF spectrum is of the essence : 2 solutions Use non-contiguous 3-kHz channels Reduce HF spectrum fragmentation
