4 A relation is a set of ordered pairs
A relation is a set of ordered pairs. The (age, height) ordered pairs below form a relation.

5 The domain of a relation is the set of first coordinates of the ordered pairs.
The range is the set of second coordinates.

6 Find the domain and range of the ordered pairs in the chart
Find the domain and range of the ordered pairs in the chart. List the values in order. Do not repeat values.

7 Find the domain and range of the relation represented by the data in the table.

8 A function is a relation that assigns exactly one value in the range to each value in the domain.
One way you can tell whether a relation is a function is to analyze the graph using the vertical line test. If any vertical line passes through more than one point of the graph, then the relation is not a function.

You can think of a function rule as an input-output machine.

y = 3x + 4 is f(x) = 3x + 4. A function is in function notation when you use f(x) instead of y. The notations g(x) and h(x) also indicate functions of x.
