Poultry Production Chapter #10

Poultry Meat o High protein o Low fat o Economical to eat o 2nd in consumption only to beef

Chickens o Layers: for egg production o Leghorn (hybrids) o Broilers: meat production o White Plymouth Rock, Cornish Crosses o Producers usually buy chicks from hatcheries o Turkeys must be artificially inseminated (have been bred for large breasts which makes it physically impossible to mate)

Getting Started o Order chicks early o Only order what you can house o Space requirements: o 10 square inches / chick under light o 25 square inches / chick house space o Chicks shouldn’t be allowed to get more than 3 ft away from light

When they arrive o Temperature = 92-95 degrees under light, 70-75 deg in house o Decrease temp. 5 degrees / week until 60 degrees o Teach how to drink right away o If chicks are huddled together under light = too cold o If none are under light = too hot o Should be scattered

Management o Debeaking: remove 1/3 of the top beak and a small part of the bottom (prevent cannibolism) o at 6-8 days old o Vaccinate (hatchery can do this) o Lighting: birds naturally reproduce in spring, simulate spring, chickens molt (shed feathers) production increases

Layer Care o Collect eggs 2-3 times per day (if hot) o Wash eggs immediately in warm water o Refridgerate & keep away from onions & mold o Production Goal: 4 lbs feed / dozen eggs o Hens produce 7 eggs / 10 days

Broilers o Don’t keep in cages (weak bones & bruise easily) o Keep light on at night (prevent cannibolism) o Market at 4 1/2 lbs for males, 3 1/2 lbs for females (about 8 weeks) o 2.1 lbs feed / lb of gain

Chicken Terms o What do you call a mature male? Rooster o What do you call a mature female? Hen o What do you call a young female? Pullet

Chicken Terms o What do you call a castrated male? Capon o Chickens Hatch o What is the incubation period? 21 days
