14 Exadata Database Machine Best Platform to Run the Oracle Database
Best Machine for Data Warehousing Best Machine for OLTP Best Machine for Database Consolidation I don’t think we need to present Exadata anymore, it was introduced in 2008 and is simply the best machine to run the Oracle database. Oracle Exadata is the best machine for Data Warehousing, OLTP as well as Database Consolidation. We can add as well that Oracle Exadata is also the best machine to run data integration processes such as ETL or replication jobs.

15 Data Integration Solutions for Exadata Use Cases
Warehouse Bulk Loading Fastest E-LT optimized for Exadata Integrated Monitoring & Management Real-Time DW Updates High Speed Data Capture & Streaming Any Latency: from Batch to Real-Time Database Consolidations Zero Downtime Upgrades Active-Active Phased Consolidation DW Appliances Migration Native Non-Oracle Connectivity Efficient Tool-Based Solution Maximum Availability Protects Your Exadata Investments Offload Workloads and Backups The Oracle data integration team has been working closely with the exadata team since day-one. Through the years we’ve learned that the number one use case for exadata data is for intelligent data warehousing. Exadata supplies the ideal platform for our customer’s next generation of warehouses. As with any typical data warehouse, there is always the need to support bulk data loading and high speed data transformations. Often in the first phase of the Exadata data warehouse customers are re-platforming older warehouse solutions on Exadata to immediately capture the performance benefits and low cost of ownership that Exadata brings. As such, bulk data integration and ETL use cases are typically the dominant data loading patterns for Exadata. Oracle Data Integrator is the best bulk data loading solution for Exadata. ODI is the only ETL platform that can leverage the full power of Exadata, integrate directly on the Exadata machine without any additional hardware, and by far provides the simplest setup and fastest overall performance on an Exadata system. No other ETL vendor can make those claims. Data Integrator is hands-down the best ETL for Exadata. Exadata systems are our customer’s future platform intended to serve for many years ahead. As you would expect those customers are looking at next generation architectures for Exadata and realtime data pipelines are at the heart of those plans. In order to enable realtime Business Intelligence on top of Exadata you need data continuously streamed to the Exadata platform. GoldenGate is the best solution for streaming data into exadata in realtime. Oracle GoldenGate is the only data replication product that can install directly on the Exadata system and capture changes with very low latency and millisecond level transaction replication. Oracle GoldenGate can also be used together with Data Integrator for hybrid use cases that demand non-invasive capture, high-speed real time replication, bulk data movement and support for very complex data transformation. Only Oracle can offer all these technical benefits wrapped into a single intelligence data warehouse solution that runs on Exadata. But data warehousing isn’t the only use case for Exadata. Many Oracle customers are leveraging Exadata for database consolidation – relocating their previously dispersed databases onto a single machine that lowers cost of ownership and improves performance. For these consolidation use cases, Oracle data integration has the solutions to put the data in Exadata. First, when our biggest customers look to upgrade their applications, migrate to Oracle database or update their Oracle database versions, they can rarely afford to take downtime on their systems. Oracle GoldenGate enables fast bi-directional transaction replication that supports Oracle to Oracle, different Oracle versions, and Non-Oracle to Oracle updates in realtime. With this capability our customers are able to phase in the deployment of new database versions and new applications without taking downtime. By using vertical or horizontal stripes of their data on different database instances, a rolling upgrade process becomes possible. Application downtime will soon be a thing of the past. Similarly, when our customers look to transition off of older database appliances like Netezza, Teradata or even the DB2 zSeries systems, the Oracle data integration products can help automate the data migration using a repeatable process. Oracle GoldenGate and Data Integrator are integrated natively to those platforms – we can leverage their data unloaders, scripting environments, their proprietary SQL and other features that will make the data migration simpler. Best of all, by using tools to help automate the migration, these data integration tools can then be used to load the Exadata systems in production. Finally, Active Data Guard is part of the data integration portfolio and is the gold-standard for Exadata High Availability. Active Data Guard can be used to create a read-capable standby system that can be used for reporting and also leveraged for pre-production testing. So for those database consolidation use cases, Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Data Integrator and Active Data Guard can help put your Exadata solutions on the fast track.

16 Data Warehouse Bulk Loading with E-LT Fastest ETL Solution for Exadata
Extract Solution ODI for bulk loading Exadata Run ODI Agent on Exadata JVM Fastest possible data transformations Benefits No extra ETL servers Uses Exadata advanced SQL functions Parallel statements in Exadata, not ETL server Integrated Management & Monitoring Easier to deploy than conventional ETL tools Faster time to market Load Transform Now let’s take a look at Oracle Data Integrator. ODI is a bulk data integration tool, but unlike other ETL technologies the ODI platform uses an E-LT approach. It sounds like marketing hype, but consider that by doing the Extract-Load and Transform in that sequence of steps, the power of Exadata can be directly applied to your data transformations. A typical ETL tool would require you to put a server in front of Exadata to load it, but why add expensive hardware just to slow Exadata down? The best thing an ETL tool can do for Exadata is to get out of its way. And, that’s just what ODI does. Since ODI uses E-LT by default (by the way, it can also be used in regular ETL mode) it can leverage the native loaders in Exadata. When it comes time to do complex data transformations, there isn’t any faster technology than the fully optimized SQL and smart scan technologies inside Exadata. Only ODI can take full advantage of Exadata’s power for data transformation.

17 Nobody Beats ODI on Exadata 7
Nobody Beats ODI on Exadata 7.5TB per Hour of Real World Data Loading and Transformations ODI ELT w/ Exadata ODI scales with Exadata ODI runs on Exadata – no ETL hardware required No new hardware required as data sets grow ODI processes used only during integration runs Exadata continually available for OLTP, BI, DW, etc Common administration, monitoring and management All the benefits of rapid tool-based ETL development Conventional ETL Additional hardware ($$) needed to scale ETL parallel optimization and design ($$$) is heavily dependent on resources available to the ETL environment ETL engine hardware resources only used for ETL  Different management, monitoring and administration from database and BI infrastructure ($$) As you can easily see from the data in this chart, ODI achieves an unbelievable 7 terabytes per hour bulk load and complex transformation time on Exadata x2-8…this is many times faster than the fastest ETL server with the most expensive hardware. ODI is proven to be the fastest way to load Exadata. But even in the value based systems – an Exadata Quarter Rack X2-2 – ODI achieves an astounding bulk load and complex transformation time of 1.5 terabytes per hour. With no additional ETL hardware and a budget-based add-on of ODI for Exadata, Oracle customers get class-leading performance on any Exadata system. In Summary: Linear ELT/ETL scalability from 1.5TB per hr (X2-2 quarter rack) to ~7TB per hr (X2-8) That’s approx 60 billion records per hr at peak on the X2-8 Data points given for Exadata v1, v2 and X2-8 Real-world data sets (TPC-H standard Item Detail) and complex data transformations Real-world DW patterns (full batch, incremental, and slowly changing dimensions)

18 Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition Best ETL Platform for Exadata
ODI’s E-LT architecture is best for Exadata Exadata powers all transformations No additional hardware is required ODI performance scales linearly with Exadata infrastructure ODI transforms the data without it ever leaving the Exadata Machine ODI implements Exadata best practices Fastest Loading Mechanisms External Tables, SQL*Loader, DBLINK, Data Pump Out of the box Index Management Support for bitmap indexes, unique/non-unique indexes Advanced Oracle Features Support Optimizer hints (Direct Path loading, Parallel, etc) Merge & Multi-Table Insert statement Any Oracle function can be leveraged (incl. analytic functions) The ELT architecture is a very powerful concept with Exadata. Consider for example those Data Consolidation use cases. If you have dozens, or even hundreds of application databases hosted inside a single Exadata machine, why would you ever need to take the data out? With conventional ETL servers the data would have to be extracted from Exadata, transformed row-by-row in the ETL server, and then loaded back up into the same Exadata machine. What a waste of bandwidth and processing! Using ODI you can move the data around inside of Exadata using the Infiniband network speeds and transform the data using the Smart Scan technology for SQL acceleration. We see customers achieving a times boost when they move their ETL to ODI on Exadata. ODI uses set-based SQL for data transformations, and after 30+ years of development the set-based SQL approach for large scale relational data manipulation is far superior to anything that the other ETL vendors have implemented in their ETL servers. Even when the data comes from outside Exadata, the ODI ELT approach is far more efficient. ODI can stage the data in the Database File System, load the data using External Tables, and then transform the data using set-base SQL. From the time the data is landed in the DBFS, we can optimize using Smart Flash technologies and maximize the bandwidth for data movement. All in all, using ODI for ETL with Exadata is just a smarter way to solve a problem.

19 Supporting most popular DBMS’s
Real-Time Data Warehouse Updates Get Data into Exadata at Any Latency GoldenGate Solution Any data, any time – at the right time! OGG & ODI for data delivery to Exadata OGG for true Real Time and ODI to cover all other intra-day or daily latencies Benefits OGG is non-invasive – no load on Sources! ODI tools can model data delivery at any latency – using Oracle GoldenGate, Triggers or Delta ETL jobs Lower costs, and data delivered at the speed of Business (at the right time) Fastest OGG ODI DB Triggers Supporting most popular DBMS’s Even though bulk data movement and ETL use cases are most common with Exadata, the way to the future is through real time data. Using Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate our customers can implement continuous data feeds into Exadata at any latency they desire. Oracle Data Integrator can be configured to do incremental ETL jobs throughout the day, or use DB Triggers, Oracle Streams and CDC Adapters for moving changed data into Exadata ever few minutes or every few hours. But for the most powerful and advanced solution ODI can automatically set up Oracle GoldenGate to continuously stream data into Exadata for realtime reporting. Oracle GoldenGate has the least amount of invasiveness on the source capture side, and is the fastest data replication solution for feeding data to Exadata in a true real time manner. Both ODI and GoldenGate install directly on the Exadata machine using lightweight agent processes. As mentioned previously, these technologies are open and heterogeneous so that they can capture changes at any latency from just about any non-Oracle databases platform. The combination of ODI and goldengate is the most advanced and elegant solution for putting data into Exadata. Delta ETL

20 Zero Downtime Database Consolidation Consolidating Old DBs into Exadata Doesn’t Require Downtime
1 Solution Seamless migration of on-premise data to private database clouds without downtime Bi-directional transaction replication between old databases and Exadata (or Oracle Database Appliance) using GoldenGate Data transformations, loads using Oracle Data Integrator Benefits Zero Downtime for key databases and apps Minimize risk with phased, rolling upgrades Faster return on investment, due to faster consolidation ERP CRM 1 Warehouse 1 As mentioned Oracle Exadata provides the right consolidation architecture for private cloud computing. Oracle Data integration products enable database consolidation and migration into Private Database Clouds and Oracle Exadata seamlessly and without interrupting business operations. A major concern in database consolidation efforts is the downtime as many of the business critical applications cannot take downtime due to major impact on business operations, SLAs and revenue. Oracle GoldenGate enables fast bi-directional transaction replication that supports Oracle to Oracle, different Oracle versions, and Non-Oracle to Oracle updates in real time. With this capability our customers are able to phase in the deployment of new database versions and new applications without taking downtime. By using vertical or horizontal stripes of their data on different database instances, a rolling upgrade process becomes possible. This is a great way to minimize the risk during the consolidation process. Oracle Data Integrator provides initial load and data transformation for database migration and consolidation . It allows migrations to cloud with trusted data as it delivers data validation, cleansing, matching and merging. HR Data Mart

21 Cloud Enablement: Migration to Oracle Exadata Migrate Non-Oracle Appliances to Exadata with Native Tools Solution ODI for modeling and mapping non-Exadata sources into the Exadata data models Native support for Netezza, Teradata, and DB2/z SQLs and DB Utilities GoldenGate for real-time CDC from Teradata or DB2 zSeries Benefits Tool-based migration is more repeatable and more automate-able Active-Active phased transition option More maintainable solution that can also be part of the long-term plans In addition to enabling database consolidation, Oracle GoldenGate and ODI deliver solutions for migration to Exadata from appliances such as Netezza, Teradata ad IBM DB2. I should add that GoldenGate is the only product that can capture changed data from Teradata in real time and therefore delivers unique zero downtime migration solution. It also supports IBM DB2 z series for zero downtime migration to Exadata. Using Oracle data integration for such migrations allows to build a repeatable and automatible process. As mentioned before phased migration option is also very valuable to minimize risks. As we will discuss in more detail in the coming slides, ODI and GG have variety of capabilities for enterprise data integration and replication needs therefore they are not project based tools but highly maintainable products that can be used as a standard part of the platform as a service approach.

26 Customer Example: Turkcell Data Warehousing on Oracle Exadata
High-Performance E-LT for Data Warehousing Integrated network operations systems to the data warehouse to offer a global reporting solution Achieved 167% ROI after 9 months by implementing an E-LT architecture 20X Performance improvement using Oracle Data Integrator on Exadata The combined solution helped decrease data preparation time for data mining from 27–29 days to 2–3 days For more detail on the TEI study for ODI:

27 ODI and Exadata – Real World Example A Disruptive Improvement in Performance
5hrs 11mins 42X IMPROVEMENT A complex branch of the customer’s tax allocation process runs 5 hrs 11 mins during quarter close Exadata and ODI (E-LT) combined is able to execute the process 42X faster (7mins 20 secs) Job execution time in minutes 7min 20sec In addition to the benchmark we have seen earlier (slide 17) we also have customer examples to share with you. A large insurance company did a proof of concept comparing ODI vs a traditional ETL tool (one of the market leaders) on Exadata. The same process that was taking 5hrs and 11 minutes to complete using the competing ETL product was taking 7 minutes and 20 seconds with ODI. Oracle Data Integrator was 42 times faster than our conventional ETL competitor on Exadata. This is quite an achievement and this shows you that only ODI can achieve maximum performance on Exadata. Performance is one aspect but we also have to consider the cost savings of ODI in such scenario. ODI runs directly on Exadata so no new HW is required while our competitors need a separate ETL server to do their processing. In this customer example the ETL server had 12 cores and almost 200Gb of RAM, with ODI there is no need to acquire or administer such HW. More Info: ETL Server: Oracle/ Sun M x S64VI (dual core -- so 12 cores total) with 196GB RAM Exadata version - ½ rack X2-2
