Through the years we’ve learned that the number one use case for exadata data is for intelligent data warehousing. Exadata supplies the ideal platform for our customer’s next generation of warehouses. As with any typical data warehouse, there is always the need to support bulk data loading and high speed data transformations. Often in the first phase of the Exadata data warehouse customers are re-platforming older warehouse solutions on Exadata to immediately capture the performance benefits and low cost of ownership that Exadata brings. As such, bulk data integration and ETL use cases are typically the dominant data loading patterns for Exadata. Oracle Data Integrator is the best bulk data loading solution for Exadata. ODI is a bulk data integration tool, but unlike other ETL technologies the ODI platform uses an E-LT approach. It sounds like marketing hype, but consider that by doing the Extract-Load and Transform in that sequence of steps, the power of Exadata can be directly applied to your data transformations. A typical ETL tool would require you to put a server in front of Exadata to load it, but why add expensive hardware just to slow Exadata down? The best thing an ETL tool can do for Exadata is to get out of its way. And, that’s just what ODI does. Since ODI uses E-LT by default (by the way, it can also be used in regular ETL mode) it can leverage the native loaders in Exadata. When it comes time to do complex data transformations, there isn’t any faster technology than the fully optimized SQL and smart scan technologies inside Exadata. Consider for example those Data Consolidation use cases. If you have dozens, or even hundreds of application databases hosted inside a single Exadata machine, why would you ever need to take the data out? With conventional ETL servers the data would have to be extracted from Exadata, transformed row-by-row in the ETL server, and then loaded back up into the same Exadata machine. What a waste of bandwidth and processing! Using ODI you can move the data around inside of Exadata using the Infiniband network speeds and transform the data using the Smart Scan technology for SQL acceleration. We see customers achieving a times boost when they move their ETL to ODI on Exadata. ODI uses set-based SQL for data transformations, and after 30+ years of development the set-based SQL approach for large scale relational data manipulation is far superior to anything that the other ETL vendors have implemented in their ETL servers. Even when the data comes from outside Exadata, the ODI ELT approach is far more efficient. 27 ODI and Exadata – Real World Example A Disruptive Improvement in Performance

A large insurance company did a proof of concept comparing ODI vs a traditional ETL tool (one of the market leaders) on Exadata. Oracle Data Integrator was 42 times faster than our conventional ETL competitor on Exadata. This is quite an achievement and this shows you that only ODI can achieve maximum performance on Exadata. Performance is one aspect but we also have to consider the cost savings of ODI in such scenario. ODI runs directly on Exadata so no new HW is required while our competitors need a separate ETL server to do their processing.
