A diagram of lipid metabolism focused on lipid transport into the mitochondrion is given in B. Increased expression of multiple fatty acid transporters and enzymes of fatty acid metabolism may contribute to increased metabolic efficiency in HIB-AGS hearts. PPAR-α-regulated transactivation effects maintain lipid metabolism under conditions of physiologic stress. AGS = arctic ground squirrel.
