The gate theory proposed that small (C) fibers activated excitatory systems (black neuron) that subsequently excited output cells—these latter cells had their activity controlled by the balance of large fibers (A-β)-mediated inhibitions (mediated by endogenous opioids) and also by descending control systems from the central nervous system (mediated by norepinephrine and serotonin).
