Purchasing power of airline employees, consequently, has remained relatively constant or increased slightly. Beginning in 2000 wage settlements have driven up average compensation at a pace much faster than the rate of inflation (5.5% for compensation vs. 2.5% for the CPI). These increases are expected to proliferate through the industry and will drive compensation rates to much higher levels by 2002. In 1999, total compensation costs reached $41.7 billion (37.9% of total operating expense). By 2002, total compensation costs are expected to rise by $10.8 billion to $52.5 billion (38.8% of operating expense).
