2 Enhancement of IEEE 802.15.4-2006 for Flexible Usage of Superframe
March 2008 Enhancement of IEEE for Flexible Usage of Superframe Betty Zhao Yongjun Liu Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. HUAWEI

3 Outline Motivation Issues - GTS competition in CAP
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Outline Motivation Issues - GTS competition in CAP - Fixed Direction for a GTS - Unavailable ‘Peer to Peer’ Summary HUAWEI <author>, <company>

4 <month year> xxx e March 2008 Motivation Besides the proven applications in commercial building and home automation, IEEE is promising for information service, voice application, P2P communication and etc. For example, voice application is feasible. - Peak data rate of IEEE is 250kbps - Normal voice data rate is between 10kbps and 50kbps All above applications need more flexible usage of superframe to support. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

5 Issue 1: GTS competition in CAP
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 1: GTS competition in CAP GTS request in IEEE - A device requiring to use GTS must send GTS request in CAP and compete with all other frames. - When the competition is successful, the device can use GTS. - PAN coordinator is free for the competition. If GTS requests are competing with common data frames, its advantage will be weakened. Requirements - Many applications depend on GTS mechanism to guarantee uninterrupted transmission. - So, low latency for accessing GTS is very necessary too. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

6 Issue 1: GTS competition in CAP
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 1: GTS competition in CAP Proposed Solution: Divide CAP into two parts. - One is dedicated for GTS request, and the other for all other frames. - All use CSMA-CA mechanism. - The duration of the two parts are variable, and may be controlled by PAN coordinator. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

7 Issue 2: Fixed Direction for a GTS
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 2: Fixed Direction for a GTS If two persons communicate each other in a real-time fashion: - talking in phone …… voice - light data sharing …… pictures and texts, chatting - mobile gaming …… command frame As soon as one finishes transmission, he will expect to receive the other’s reply immediately. However, the other has to compete for a new GTS before reply according to Std.. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

8 Issue 2: Fixed Direction for a GTS
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 2: Fixed Direction for a GTS GTS direction in IEEE - The GTS direction is specified as either transmit or receive. - The device address and direction identify each GTS uniquely. At present, GTS directions field of beacon frame only can indicate GTS direction as transmit-only by 0 or receive-only by 1. Proposed solution - Under some situations, GTS direction is permitted to be self-adaptive. - Therefore, two devices can use GTS in turn for communication. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

9 Issue 3: Unavailable ‘Peer to Peer’
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 3: Unavailable ‘Peer to Peer’ Apart from the simple controlling function, lots of applications will encounter the scenarios using peer to peer communication, especially when the chip is integrated into mobile phone. If two end devices (intra-PAN) want to communicate, the transmission has to be via PAN coordinator. GTS request competing in CAP (originating end device) plus GTS arrangement at the next superframe (PAN coordinator) = huge delay HUAWEI <author>, <company>

10 Issue 3: Unavailable ‘Peer to Peer’
<month year> xxx e March 2008 Issue 3: Unavailable ‘Peer to Peer’ Problem illustration If B transmits a frame to C using GTS, the frame will arrive C in two or more superframes Proposed solution - Establishing peer to peer communication between two devices by themselves or PAN coordinator temporarily at inactive period of superframe when needed. HUAWEI <author>, <company>

11 <month year> xxx e March 2008 Summary IEEE is capable of supporting many popular applications on mobile phone, while they have a promising market. In order to support those application better, current Std. needs some enhancements as follow: - Divide CAP into two parts, one is dedicated for GTS requests. - Break the limitation on GTS directions to make it variable. - Permit peer to peer communication.
