1 DIII-D Frontiers Science Proposal Template
This template is intended to indicate key elements that need to be addressed in a DIII-D Frontiers Science proposal Template works with various titles in bold, then you fill in sub’s as answers to these questions, but… …it is not a straitjacket – feel free to bust the format but try to make sure key points from the template get addressed Input can be spread over a few slides to convey the message Plots of motivating previous results or expected future results are helpful Aim for 5-10 minutes

2 Context: <Title summarizes key research area significance>
Main Scientific Challenge of this research area <description of critical physics question> Relevance <impacts understanding of xxx> Techniques used to date <summaries of experiments, measurements, simulation at very high level> Scientific progress to date <2-4 lines on key elements accomplished> Key gap issue <element needing research which this proposal addresses> <describe how resolving this would advance this field> Figures to give context and motivation, e.g.: past data

3 DIII-D Proposal < Experiment Goal – eg Use X to [describe goal]>
Scientific question to be tested on DIII-D <description of critical physics question> Experimental Technique <2-4 lines on key elements> Analysis done / planned Predictive simulation done already Analysis that will be done after Why DIII-D? / Why now? <Key strengths D3D brings, uniqueness?> Related studies elsewhere <detail relevant work this builds upon, and/or coordinated studies with other experiments / theory groups> Impact of successful result <describe how DIII-D study will inform or advance primary topic> Figures to show type of experiment envisaged plot of expected type of result or relevant predictive simulation

4 Experiment Details <title captures main element of technique>
Key hardware elements required Heating, gas, shaping, pellets, 3D, etc. Key measurements required <list key elements> Particular preparation necessary <shot development, analysis, simulation, hardware/diagnostic development> Figures to give idea of experiment methodology Could be a diagram or plots of scans expected

5 Experiment Team < summarize main institutions/devices engaged>
University personnel Name – key roles/expertise brought DIII-D personnel [idea here is to start to craft a list of key people who can help to kick start process (less relevant to experiment selection)]

6 Standard DIII-D Proposal Template for collaborative work with NSTX-U follows & example for reference…

7 < Experiment Goal – eg Use X to [describe goal]> – Name
Physics principle to be tested <description of critical physics question> Technique & output expected <1 line explanation> <plot or data expected and how it will answer a key question> Analysis done / planned Predictive simulation done already Analysis that will be done after Why DIII-D? / Why now? Key strengths D3D brings and critical value to this work Need to resolve requirements for Q=10 in ITER How proposal builds on NSTX-U studies Past result, gap filled by new study Impact on path to fusion energy Problem solved. How will this enable ITER or DEMO to succeed? Figures to give context and motivation, e.g.: past data or predictive simulation and/or figure of expected result Template ROF proposal (delete this label)

8 Use NTV to Improve Core Transport in Low Rotation Electron Heated Plasmas – Buttery
Physics principle to be tested Will rotation shear reduce turbulence in electron dominant plasmas? Technique & output expected Scan 3D field NTV effects in H mode Decrease in turbulence with rotn shear Analysis done / planned Predictive simulation shows this will work Will run linear + non-linear GYRO to make sense of it & project ITER Why DIII-D? / Why now? Unique low torque and turbulence diagnostics Need to resolve requirements for Q=10 in ITER How proposal builds on NSTX-U studies Extends tests of NTV torque and plasma response to 3D fields Impact on path to fusion energy Show path to recover performance in ITER baseline EXAMPLE not sure if should be distributed
