28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 3 Routine instead of innovations effect Evangelisch Stiftische Gymnasium Gütersloh (ESG) - 9 years of laptop use Lycée Aline Mayrisch Luxembourg (LAML) 1500 computers – 6 years of laptop use 2006/2007 Online survey classes 8-10 (teacher, students, parents) Interviews Visiting 60 lessons (recorded on video) Workshop participants of all groups (teacher, students, parents, head of the school) Former studies of these schools (2001/2003) can be compared with

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 4 Laptop use in school – the next step? Which methods have persisted? How time consuming is lesson preparation once a routine is established? - How great is the reuseability of lesson preparaion? Is laptop use in school helpful for the requirements in the future?

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 5 Different forms of organisation the work in the classroom Whole class working on a digital work sheet Presentation Roleplay Amazonas

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 6 Software/Methods are used in the lessons

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 7 Digital work sheets digital work sheet: Marking the parts of the sentences digital work sheet: read the text and fill in your results Use a math programm to visualize hyperbola funktions

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 8 Some more results Laptops must be used frequently once acquired. Optimal seems to be daily use. LAMLESG Latops since… 6 years9 years Usage< 1 to 2 times a week1-4 teaching hours per day ParentsDissatisfied because of low usage and high costs satisfied Computer literacy Insecurity in respect to the general file system Versed, experienced in computer use Keyboard use Slow(er) typingThe typing speed often reaches up to 300 characters a min. Typing errors Many typing errors in the text body and is thus quicker than handwriting

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 9 More variable length of time and increased frequency of use Checking Homework Searching in the Internet Working on a digital work sheet Taking the laptop home Using the Laptop like a computer lab t 45 minutes Close Laptop Short sequences of use – laptop is a tool It is used to enhance elements of teaching ESG (9 years) LAML (6 years) Laptop-lesson No implementation as a tool.

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 10 Advantages of using laptops Enhances the educational change process [1] More variable length of time and increased frequency of use Gives rise to methodological diversity. Better level differentiation is possible. W-LAN enables any-time, anywhere computing leading to more flexible organisation of schoolwork in classes or school building (different rooms, leads to more self- organized working/learning) Key competence: computer and internet literacy will be learned easily [2] Increased pupil motivation

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 11 Believe that Laptop use in school will be helpful for the requirements in the future... Only LAML Does laptop use really prepare the pupils for the future?

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 12 Laptop use in school will be helpful to me in the future...

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 13 Change raises problems frustration with technical problems, insufficient media competencies among the teachers, teachers are required to make an additional effort to plan the lessons at the introductory period (no time left for preparing your lessons), demotivated –due to the lack of interest among colleagues and of the school director, –because of a lack of continuity in the school, –resistance of colleagues who refuse computer or laptop use. But how can this necessary change be effectuated? If you deliver a bunch of hardware to the schools, a lot of new problems will emerge.

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 14 What are good leadership instruments to promote this change process? laptop-steering-group –Supports the teachers at planning the lessons especially at the introductory period –The Head of the school should have a strong influence on the subject groups –Teacher training in schools (organized by the laptop- steering-group) Support-service in the school building (to minimize the downtimes if ones laptop is broken) Laptop-curriculum according to the school profile School leader are interested and have a look at the presentation of the results of the classroom work Continuity of using laptops (systemising contents, rules, processes)

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 15 Influence of the laptop group

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 16 Questions to discuss Computers have been used since 20 years in schools, but still are not implemented well. Do you think it is a good idea that children get their own school laptop? Do you think we will have a change to laptop-hardware? Or will that change fail due to lack of money or will the teachers be resistant to the idea? Do you think the change in the hardware concept will come along with a change in the educational concept? Will ideas like constructivism achieve more popularity?

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 17 Thank you !! Thomas Seidel tseidel@arcor.de

28.11.2007 Laptop use in school - the next step? Dissertation Thomas Seidel - tseidel@arcor.de Folie Nr 18 What has changed after all the years The rules for laptop use are revised. Better fitting to the workflow. systemising contents, processes (teaching and technical support) More teachers are teaching laptop classes Cooperation of the teachers is still very good Laptopcurriculum concerted to the school profile Allow to write tests on their laptop (D, M, E) At the 10th grade they have no paper file anymore everything is written in the laptop
