The infinitive form includes the reflexive pronoun sich. The word etwas refers to the direct object of the sentence and is in the accusative case. sich etwas anhören to listen to something sich etwas anziehen to put something on sich etwas ausleihen to borrow something sich etwas aussuchen to choose something sich etwas ausziehen to take something off sich etwas einbilden to imagine something about oneself sich etwas leisten to afford something sich Sorgen um etwas machen to worry about something sich etwas merken to take note of something sich etwas überlegen to think something over sich etwas vorstellen to imagine something sich etwas wünschen to wish for something

Ich kann mir ein Essen ohne Fleisch nicht vorstellen. I cant imagine a meal without meat. Haben Sie sich ein interessantes Buch ausgesucht? Have you chosen an interesting book (for yourself)? When they are reflexive, dative reflexive pronouns are used to indicate an indirect object. The person being referred to is in the dative and the object is in the accusative case. In these examples, the dative pronoun does not have to be mentioned, but it is very common in spoken German. Kochen Sie (sich) jeden Morgen einen Kaffee? Do you make (yourself) coffee every morning? Er kauft (sich) ein Eis in der Eisdiele. Hes buying (himself) an ice cream at the ice cream parlor.

In English expressions such as I brush my teeth, the possessive pronoun is used to indicate whose teeth. In German, such expressions use a dative reflexive pronoun to designate whose teeth are being brushed. The dative reflexive pronoun mir replaces the possessive adjective mein. Ich putze mir die Zähne. I brush my teeth. Sie wäscht sich die Hände. She washes her hands.
