1 “Miss Awful” Annotation Guide
Directions: Use the guide to annotate as you read. Read the corresponding slide prior to reading each page. At the end of the page, pause to ensure you have marked and noted in the margins based on the prompts. Any sentence starters should be completed in the grammar section of your binder (slides 6, 9, 14, 16).

Read and annotate page 3 of Arthur Cavanaugh’s short story “Miss Awful”. As you read, How is Roger characterized? UNDERLINE key words/descriptions.         Then mark the margins with adjectives that describe the young boy. 2.     How is Miss Wilson characterized? UNDERLINE key words/descriptions.         Mark the margins with adjectives that describe the schoolteacher.

Read and annotate page 4 of Arthur Cavanaugh’s short story “Miss Awful”. As you read, UNDERLINE details from pages 3 AND 4 that reveal details about the setting, St. Geoffrey’s School.         Mark the margins of your text your impressions of the setting.

4 Focus on thinking: pages 3-4
The narrator says, “In view of events to come, Roger was entitled to a few carefree hours” (Cavanaugh 4).     PREDICT, with your group, what are “the events to come”?     Add your discussion points to the margins of the text. *Consider the title of the story and what the reader has learned about Miss Wilson.

Read and annotate page 5 of Arthur Cavanaugh’s short story “Miss Awful”. As you read, In your text, UNDERLINE the school supplies Roger has brought with him to school. In your groups, decide two more adjectives that characterize Roger based on this revelation. Add your thoughts to the margins of your text. 2. UNDERLINE words/phrases that describe the classroom’s new appearance. What might these words help to foreshadow? Mark your thinking in the margins of the text.

6 Reflect on pages 1-5 – complete these in the grammar section of your binder.

Read and annotate pages 6-7 As you read: How has the new teacher been characterized? UNDERLINE your answers in the text. Then mark the margins by listing adjectives that describe Miss Wilson’s replacement. How, according to the new teacher, are children like plants? UNDERLINE the answer in the margins of the text. Considering how she’s been characterized, how would the new teacher define “proper care”?

The narrator says in the last paragraph, “...it was apparent to Virginia Clark that something was drastically wrong with her son’s behavior” (Cavanaugh 7). Discuss the following and MARK the text’s margins with your thinking: From Mrs. Clark’s point-of-view, what is “wrong” with Roger’s behavior? From Roger’s point-of-view, why might he be behaving this way?

In the grammar/SoW section of your notebook write each of the following sentence starters AND complete them with details from the story. Miss Awful is strict because … Miss Awful is strict, but … Miss Awful is strict, so ...

10 “Miss Awful” close reading page 8:
In the margins of your text, respond to the following passage from “Miss Awful”. Roger says, “I have homework to do. Punishment homework. Ten words, ten times each. On account of the witch’s spelling test” (Cavanaugh 8). Is Roger’s nickname for Miss Wilson--a “witch”--a fair description of her? Why or why not? Why do you suppose she disciplines the children the way she does?

Read pages Then stop at page 11 and discuss the following: Look back at your notes from the exposition about how Roger had been characterized. DISCUSS with your group the author’s purpose in adding the story about Miss Awful’s eviction on page 11. What might Cavanaugh be foreshadowing in this scene?

Discuss the children’s ideas about their plans for Miss Awful with your group (pages 12-13). Record your group’s reactions in the margins of the text.
